AFLDD Media review the year that was, highlighting key programs, events and exciting news stories that happened throughout each month.
School teachers Matthew Russell (Withcott SS) and Rodney Spain (St Joseph's College Twmba) continued to lead the way in the 2013 AFLQDD School Ambassador of the Year program in their respective divisions. Australian Rules has grown by nearly 60% across the regions Primary and Secondary schools since 2009 and this is largely due to the passionate work done by AFL School Ambassadors.
Young Warwick Redback Scott See was off on a Gaelic Football odyssey after selection in a small group to tour Ireland, United Kingdom and France with the Wanderers Australia group playing Gaelic and hybrid football.
June was also a good month for the Under 14 Crows as they secured four straight victories to propell them into the Top five and securing a finals berth, one month out from the end of the Under 14 AFL BJ season.
The sixth month of the year was also a milestone month as for the first time in the region's history the AFL Darling Downs Juniors surpassed 800 registered juniors.
“These figures really show that the league is moving in the right direction” said AFLQDD Regional Manager Keith Webb.
Crossing from soccer to Australian Football was always a difficult decision but in June it proved to be a life changing move, as the regions seventh Queensland representative for the year competed at the 2013 Womens Nationals in Cairns. Marnie McGorm spoke to AFLDD Media about her crossing over.
Charlie Rose Cup returned in June for the first time in years and after 8 years of no success, the Independent schools side finally took the biccies on a crisp afternoon at Rockville Oval.
A double page spread in the Courier Mail highlighted the terrific work of University volunteer Ross Savill, they called him the Pied Piper of the West. Andrew Hamilton of the Courier Mail did a fantastic piece on one of the regions great volunteers.
June was also a milestone month for University AFC veteran Scott Sowerby who played his 400th game of senior Australian Rules when the Cougars took on South Toowoomba Bombers. It was a memorable game for the 400-game veteran as the Cougars recorded a 69-point victory with Sowerby showing his class booting 3 majors.
Coolaroo junior Campbell Aston wrapped up a big June when he was selected in the Under 12 Queensland Blaze side after an impressive Under 12 Schoolboys State Champs. Aston was the eighth Downs product to be selected in a Queensland side for 2013.
