In the glittering surroundings of the Great Hall at the International College of Management, the Manly Wolves celebrated season 2013. Attended by sponsors and dignitaries the Club celebrated its players and Club members in what was a stellar season.
The Club celebrated a rich haul for the year including a Club Championship, Phelan Medallist in Captain Tyrone Armitage and the Senior and Under 18 teams winning their respective competitions. The voting for the players awards was hotly contested, but possibly pushed down in the priorities of the night with a rousing speech by Club Founder Harry Marston and the hilarity of Mathew ‘Razzle’ Rawle explaining to all present his 13 year history as a player with the Club.
Having bolted to an early lead in the Marston Medal count the question was would Anthony Robertson hang on to secure his third victory while being hotly pursued by Harrison Koch. In the final vote Anthony ‘Robbo’ Robertson was able to celebrate victory (albeit from an overseas location) and the award was collected by his father Peter, also a past winner of the award. Harrison was runner up and also won best in finals.
Dominic Humphries, was the well deserved winner of the Reserves, Leigh Adams Medal. As he was recovering from post season surgery he also could not be present to accept his award which allowed ‘Razzle’ the opportunity to again extol his personal attributes in his usual calm and understated way.
The club’s Under 18s were well represented and Greg Burke was the deserved winner of the medal as best and fairest, in a star studded group that included several that tasted senior football during the year.
The division 4 side was much shuffled during the year with players called to higher duties however amazingly managed to beat teams that played in the finals, but fall against others. The topsy turvy year displayed fantastic commitment from the core group of players and Sean McCaffrey was standout winner of the best and Fairest award.
The tireless and humble Gary Wearne was announced as the Clubman of the year. Gary is living proof that if you cannot be all things to all people you can go really close. During the year he did everything but pull on the boots and he is a great representative of the many volunteers that allow the Club’s players to succeed. The other important winners were Justin Hall as winner of the Craig Bradley award for his breadth of contribution as both a player and supporter of the club as a whole, constantly updating the Club App and various social media streams.
Leigh Brain, unsurprisingly was presented the Club’s ‘Coach of the year award’, despite the great efforts of Louis Canatelli with the under 18s.
The final award of real note went to Jack Hunter, a first year player, who held down the senior centre half forward position until an ill timed but long planned holiday removed him from the seniors and was unable to play in either the senior or Reserve Grand Finals. All Coaches and players had a fantastic night and special recognition must to go the gracious Anne Wilson who was the sponsor of the event in addition to her sponsorship of the Club.
A fantastic night, well celebrated … now for 2014.
