AFLDD Media review the season of each of the regions clubs, reviewing the season that was including the club highlights and key moments throughout 2013.
South Burnett are the fourth club on the AFLDD season review list and it has been an up and down season for the Sainters in their inaugural year. The 2013 year started with the bang as the Red, Black and White played two preseason challenge matches against Pomona AFC and Bribie Island AFC but unfortunately didn't come away with the win but did come away a stronger unit and ready for Round ONE.
After given the green light to officially compete in the AFL Darling Downs League, the new boys on the block had been given Lockyer Valley Demons to kick off their campaign in Round 1, rivalry round. South Burnett were too good for the Demons coming away with the four premiership points after their 38-point victory.
Also during Round 1 proceedings the Sainters decided to take a stand against Domestic Violence and worked closely to set up a breakfast during one of their home games as a part of Domestic and Family Violence Month.
The Breakfast attracted a good crowd for the family fun event that was delivering a serious message.
After their impressive debut the Saints senior men's side were only able to record a further three victories including a nail-biter in Round 9 when South Burnett defeated other newcomers Chinchilla by a slender 1-point. This game had the entire South East corner talking and media outlets across the South West talking. ABC South Queensland coverage click here.
For the Young Under 12 Saints, unfortunately they were only able to record the one victory during season 2013 and that was in Round 18 of the McDonald's Trophy. The young South Burnett side put together a master class in their 28-goal victory. Joshua Soley the best on the day booting a bag of five majors in sides first victory.
It was a similar story for the South Burnett Under 14's but were able to notch up three premiership victories in their inaugural season. Their three victories were against Goondiwindi (round 3), Lockyer Valley (Round 10) and Goondiwindi (round 17) again later in the season. Keegan Wright was the stand out Under 14 Saint taking home the leading goal-kicker away, with a season high and career high game of 12-majors in Round 3 against the Hawks.
The Sainters also got in touch with the old selves again holding no doubt their first of many "old dogs" day. South Burnett turned back the clock in their clash against Warwick at home and wore the old Kingaroy Bulldogs, which will become an annual heritage round.
With 100+ members in 2013, the Saints are looking to march past that mark well and truly in 2014.
South Burnett also took out a few key volunteer awards in their inaugural season - Senior Coach Steve Humbler was crowned the 2013 AFLDD Coach of the Year. While President Dan Clacy took out the top honours and rewarded for his tireless efforts with the 2013 AFLDD Senior Volunteer of the Year. 2013 club Vice-President and Auskick Coordinator Will Reid was also rewarded for his superb work at both the South Burnett AFC and Wondai State School Auskick centres taking out the 2013 Darling Downs Auskick Volunteer of the Year award.
South Burnett have just kicked started the clubs very own AFL 9's competition which is running every Tuesday evening at the home of the Saints, Lyle Vidler Oval. South Burnett were also successful in conjunction with the Kingaroy Sports House in receiving funding to upgrade their current club house.
