AFLDD Media review the year that was, highlighting key programs, events and exciting news stories that happened throughout each month.
May kicked off with the nationally themed round "Kids First", where the program guides parents and supporters towards positive behaviour to ensure everyone – particularly children - obtain maximum benefit and enjoyment from their football.
Rookie Footballer Georgie Seaniger was nervous yet excited to compete against the country's best female footballers at the May National Championships in Shepparton Victoria. Seaniger was one of three Darling Downs girls along with Isabelle Baldock and Danielle Wall to earn a maroon guernsey after helping the Southern Stars finish second at the state titles in Cairns.
May, also saw the start of the inaugural Women's league competition with Warwick, Lockyer Valley and eventual Premiers South Toowoomba take to the field for the first time at the home of the Redback's, Roddies Oval. South Toowoomba came away with wins over both the Demons and Redback's while the Reddies women's took the premiership points against Lockyer Valley.
The 2013 City and Country representative sides were announced, with eventual Premiers Coolaroo having the most players named, a total of seven representing the City Demons. Country were too strong on the day though, recording an impressive 21-point win over the much fancied City side.
Highfields Lions cracked a massive milestone during the month of May when they recorded their 100th junior playing member. The Highfields Lions first entered the AFL Darling Downs Juniors competition in 2003 as residents started moving in to the new area 15 minutes North of Toowoomba. As the population increased, the club initially struggled to gain a foothold in the area with not many more than 50 junior players ever registered in a single year.
Centenary Heights State High School went back to back after going through the AFLQ Schools Darling Downs Cup undefeated. The previously run Independent and Brisbane Lions Cups were reformatted for the first time this year with all competing schools coming together to the same venue for a round robin style carnival day.
Concordia College went through the round robin stages of the u14 Division of the DD Cup but were beaten by Toowoomba Grammar in the shortened final.
South Burnett Saint, executive member/player was recognised during Volunteer Week through his tireless efforts of growing and developing the new clubs junior numbers.
The Our Lady of Lourdes girls and Toowoomba Grammar boys teams took out the annual Brisbane Lions Cup carnival for their respective competitions. Both schools had never competed in the one-day carnival before and was a great result for the two schools on debut.
Lachlan Dignan continued to develop his football career as he starred for the Brisbane Lions Reserves in their win over Southport in May. With the regular AFL listed players playing high quality games Dignan was among the best in the 12-point win.
May was also a chance for the region to showcase the local footy and it was the Dalby Swans AFC who were on show to the whole State as they hosted the 2013 Under 15 School-Boys State Championships.
At the end of May, Coolaroo AFC sat a-top of the Allied Pickford's premiership ladder after a 6 and '0' start to the season. While Coolaroo (u12), Highfields (u14) and Dalby (u16) were on top of their respective ladders.
This is the fifth of twelve installments of the 'Year in Review', stay tuned as we highlight the year that was, 2013.
