AFLDD Media review the year that was, highlighting key programs, events and exciting news stories that happened throughout each month.
April was go month, with the 2013 season getting under way at the much later Round 1 start date of April 7th. Toowoomba Tigers began their tilt for four straight flags as the three-time reigning premiers appointed John Wilson as the new coach for the Allied Pickford's premiership season.
The 2013 season began with a bang as the two new clubs South Burnett and Chinchilla opened their inaugural AFLDD seasons with mixed results. The Saints were able to record a historic 38-point victory over rivals Lockyer while the SUNS went down to Western Downs rivals Dalby by over 25-goals.
Tigers went down in the opening round to the Bombers while University and Warwick started the season on a high. The opening month of footy also proved to be a testing one as the Goondiwindi Hawks players enjoyed some quality bonding time, duration of 12hours in total it took for the Hawks bus to get home after breaking down just outside of Kingaroy.
Warwick finished April on top of the Allied Pickford's ladder with a 4 and '0' start to the season as the eventual premiers Coolaroo were nipping at their heels with a 3 and '0' record after the round 1 bye in Rivalry Round.
The Darling Downs Crows also kicked off their season but unfortunately with a loss, as the Redland Sharks proved too classy for the young Crows.
Matthew Russell and Rodney Spain led early in the School Ambassador of the year in their respective categories, as both teachers ticked off a number of AFLQ School programs by April.
Former Darling Downs Crows Premiership Captain Lochie Dignan also had a big April after his call up to debut for the Brisbane Lions Reserves to take on the Gold Coast SUNS reserves in Mackay for the NEAFL Anzac Day clash. It was a game to remember as he lined up beside Brisbane Lions legend Simon Black for the match.
Preparation also begun in April for the refreshed City V Country clash with the representative coaches announced, Nick Barker (city) and Ben Adams (country) given the honours. Representative duties were high on the agenda as the Darling Downs Under 16 school girls side finished fifth out of eight sides at the 2013 School Girls State Championships with Danielle Wall, Grace Krautz and Shaleise Fischer all named in the QLD merit side.
Marnie McGorm became the seventh female footballer from the Darling Downs region to be named in a State side in 2013 when she was named in the 2013 Queensland Women's Sunfire side. Making this her third appearance in the Maroon and white after successive appearances in the Under 18 QLD youth girls side.
This is the fourth of twelve installments of the 'Year in Review', stay tuned as we highlight the year that was, 2013.
