AFLDD Media review the year that was, highlighting key programs, events and exciting news stories that happened throughout each month.
March, was labelled the month of giving.
The month kicked off with 50 coaches updating or undertaking the level one coaching course for the first time at the superb Toowoomba SHS Mt Lofty Campus facilities. The same weekend it was officially announced that AFL Darling Downs were giving women the opportunity to play our great game, as the local media heavily promoted and backed the concept of the Women's only League.
The Warwick Redbacks retained the Cardinal Cup, the preseason carnival which is played between Jimboomba, Goondiwindi and Lismore. The Sovereign Hotel in Warwick threw a lifeline to the competition as the summer rain played havoc on the Redback's home venue, moving the competition to Jimboomba with the Warwick business continuing to sponsor the event.
Darren Murphy was appointed the regions Umpiring Manager, taking over from Wayne Waltisbuhl who held the position for the previous four seasons. Along with this appointment, Tom Marshall took up the newly created Talent position overseeing the regions talent programs, assisting AFL Queensland staff.
March highlighted the regions clubs receiving funding via various grant projects, Warwick Redback's received $100,000 to help build their "nest" thanks to the 'Get Playing' grant. While four other clubs received funding from the 'Get Going' grants including Chinchilla SUNS, South Burnett Saints ($10,000 ea) along with University and Toowoomba East ($6,500approx).
In school footy, St Joseph's College upset powerhouse girls secondary school St Ursula's by defeating the previous undefeated St Ursula's team in the Youth Girls Cup final. St Joseph's advanced to the State Quarter Finals but unfortunately couldn't advance any further. St Saviour's took out the Junior division of the Youth Girls Cup also advancing to the Quarter Finals but that is were their journey stopped.
Representative school footy was also in full swing throughout March, as the regions school system held the first ever trials for a school based all girls team. Led by School Ambassador Dan Fraser and assisted by other Ambassadors Clinton Watts and Tan Van Den Acker, DD were able to selected a very strong team for the championships.
