COUNTRY BASKETBALL LEAGUE AT ICEHOUSE

The Mount Gambier Lakers host the Warrnambool Seahawks in Round 2 of the 2013/2014 Country Victoria Basketball League at 7 pm on Saturday night. This will be the first hit out for the Seahawks in this new season. The Seahawks last played at the Ice House in February when they went down to the Lakers in the South West Conference Final after strong performances in the final series. The depth of talent of their development squad was impressive last season and is expected to be  even better this season.

The Lakers returned from their double header road trip with a 1 win and 1 loss record. They went down to home side Horsham, 60 -75, on Saturday but then bounced back 73-50 against the Stawell Wildcats on the way home on Sunday.

A spirited start by Horsham in a high standard encounter set up a 6 point lead at quarter time. Simon Berkefeld dominated in offence for the Lakers as the closed the margin to 3 at the main break. The third period was even in court play and on the score board with the final result up for grabs. The home side finished strongly to outscore the Lakers 24-12 for a final score line of 75-60.

Top scorers for Horsham were M.Lovel and C. Bruce each with 16 while Simon Berkefeld had 21 supported by Matt Berkefeld on 10 and Dellon Brown on 9.

The Lakers dominated the first quarter of the game against Stawell to the tune of 22-3 on Sunday to set up a 73-50 win. The rest of the game was an even affair on the scoreboard in which the Lakers maintained a comfortable lead. The scoring was shared around with 4 players getting into double figures led by Dellon Brown with 15 and Simon Berkefeld on 13. Mitchell Mott and Marcel Last each finished with 12. Leading scorers for Stawell were J.Freeland and T. Smith.

The Lakers expect to have Jak Ryan and Matt Parslow suit up against Warrnambool on Saturday night. The game promises to be entertaining and to feature high scoring by both sides. Presentations and a light supper will follow the game.
