Greeted by a beautiful Spring day, over 60 up and coming Aussie Rule stars congregated onto the grounds of Toowoomba East State School. With primary school aged, boys and girls coming from all parts of the Darling Downs, one thing was sure they were keen to begin. From the Speccie mat to the marking cube and HUGE inflatable field, participants were kept busy along with learning various techniques of tackling and coordination.
The BBQ lunch was a hit, as was the colouring in competition but the biggest ‘hit’ of the afternoon was when iconic mascots Ronald McDonald and Bernie Gabba Vegas arrived. Both Bernie and Ronald were greeted with cheers, that were no doubt heard by all in the surrounding community. Both mascots went head to head in a handball and kicking competition, Bernie Gabba took the honours with two straight handballs as the usually burger flipping Ronald struggled. It was a different story as the big footed Ronald McDonald bombed a long torpedo to take the honours over Bernie Gabba in hot conditions. Inside word was that Bernie let Ronald take out the kicking.
Both Ronald and Bernie were on hand to give out Macca’s Showbags filled full of awesome goodies including stickers, tattoos, water bottle, footy and all Super Campers received a limited edition AFL Finals Series poster. But the main event was yet to come, the drawing of the winner of the PlayStation 3 console and AFL Live 2 game. Toowoomba East State School went quiet for the first time all day as the winner Jett was drawn as the winner.
From the inflatables to showbags and mascots, one thing was sure, everyone was ‘lovin it’.
