Sydney University broke Balmain’s strangle-hold on the Women’s competition with a 26-point win in the Division One Grand Final.
It was just rewards for the minor premiers who only lost two games all year. Stephanie Walker and Jennifer Lew were two of the key players for Sydney University this year.
UNSW/ES Stingrays had a breakout year finishing the regular season in second but they were eventually knocked out by the seasoned Balmain in the Preliminary Final where inaccurate kicking cruelled their chances.
From there, there was a gap to the Western Wolves who made up the final position in the finals series. They challenged the sides named above but eventually couldn’t maintain the momentum when it came to their Elimination Final with Balmain.
Newtown and Wollongong finished second-last and last respectively with three wins between them. In a highlight for Wollongong, Madelane Collier was named as the League Best and Fairest player.
There was no more dominant side in AFL Sydney than Macquarie University in the Women’s Division Two competition. They were unbeaten all year and despite being challenged at stages by Southern Power in the Grand Final- they stood head and shoulders above the rest of the pack.
Penrith Ramettes were able to sing their club song with much more regularity this season- with six wins a much better return than their one draw last year. Expect continued improvement next season.
UTS Shamrocks finished in fourth position with six wins for the season, with Randwick City (three wins) and Auburn (one win) rounding up the ladder.
