Olympic U16's Upstage Roar Women

Olympic’s Under 16 Boys stunned Brisbane Roar’s W-League stars on Sunday evening, prevailing 4-0 in a highly entertaining friendly match at Goodwin Park.

The results went someway to overturning the disappointment of the scoreline in the preceding seniors fixture that saw Olympic fall 11-1 to Roar's A-League squad.

Anthony Poljak proved the stand-out for the hosts, slotting three goals past German international and UEFA Female Player of the Year Nadine Angerer in the Roar goalmouth.

Poljak was cruelly denied a fourth from a deft chip early in the second half when his shot bounced back off the far upright.

Roar’s W-Leaguers were full of energy against the Olympic youngsters, however the hosts soon turned a midfield height advantage and a speedy front three in their favour.

Poljak struck twice in the opening ten minutes to stun the two-time W-League Champions, his second secured with a classy one-on-one finish past an outstretched Angerer.

Prolific Olympic striker Dylan Wenzell-Halls blasted his shot high and handsome from 25 yards shortly after before highly-regarded goalkeeper Brandon Cuminao denied Matilda Tameka Butt from the penalty spot on 17 minutes.

Olympic held their two goal advantage until the break, however Roar conceded again from an own goal when a lack of communication saw Angerer wrong-footed by a back pass.

Poljak then capped off his impressive performance in controversial circumstances with 28 minutes remaining – referee Lara Smith overruling her assistant’s offside flag that saw the Roar defensive line give up the chase before Poljak again finished assuredly.

Roar fielded a near full-strength side for the clash, with Hayley Raso and Brooke Spence the only two high-profile players missing from the team.

The match followed the Olympic senior teams run against Roar’s A-League outfit.

While that result failed to flatter, the club still took a positive out of the day, with $1300 raised at the gate for the Children’s Hospital Foundation.
