Illawarra
How their year went
There was some promise early for the Lions. Despite losing regularly, the Lions especially in the first fortnight challenged two likely sides in UTS and Manly-Warringah. Their biggest loss came in Round 6 against Pennant Hills with a number of withdrawals not aiding their cause. The Lions only won one game- their last round encounter against Sydney Hills. They finished with the worst attacking record in the league.
What they need
Players who can kick goals and better users of the ball across half-back and in the middle of the ground.
Shining lights
Jeremy Daniher was by far their best player this season. The dogged in-and-under midfielder was a much-needed return to the club.
Season defining moment
After honourable losses in the first fortnight, they had their chances against Sydney University in Round 3 but struggled to create opportunities before losing by 33 points. This was their year in a nutshell.
Players on the rise
Jacob Brookfield is an up-and-comer defender who needs more support around him. Their Under 18 side has a good winning record in the last two years so no doubt Illawarra supporters will look for a number of these players to make an impression in the senior side in the years to come.
Grade
D
Their year didn’t start well by losing Ethan Hailey and leading goal kicker, Ryan Price to clubs outside the area and they didn’t recover from there on in.
2014 prediction
There are a number of holes in their list and with the Under 18s to become the Under 19s next year; the talented juniors will likely be kept within this age group. Hopefully they will win more games but unless they fix these holes, it will be another tough year.
