Sydney University
How their year went
The Students made the most of a soft start, winning their first three games before losing their next two. They had one of their better wins against Western Suburbs in Round 6. Mixed some big wins with some big losses in the middle half of the season before struggling to win in their last few rounds. Their final fortnight saw two tight losses against Pennant Hills and Sydney University.
What they need
With their top grade in the NEAFL competition, Sydney University need to continue to build their pool of depth, especially in key positions.
Shining lights
Ruckman, Callum Kennedy came from the lower grades to make a strong impression, so much so he was a late inclusion in the Development Representative squad. Charlie Shaw was also enigmatic up forward.
Season defining moment
For a side that needed to win every 50-50 game to be any chance of making the finals, their Round 5 loss at home against UTS proved in time to be damaging to their finals chances.
Players on the rise
There are a few in this category. Jethro Braico has good pace and can also play as an inside midfielder. MJ Figg continues to develop as a likely key position forward and back. Fred Skulley is another who shows promise.
Grade
C+
It was an honest and admittedly much improved showing from Sydney University to go from only one win last year to eight this year. They didn’t claim a big scalp but are moving in the right direction.
2014 prediction
The proof will be in the pudding as to whether Sydney University can continue to march up the ladder in 2014. They need more depth so their efforts over the off-season will almost be as important in determining where they should finish next season. My guess would be a finishing position similar to this year.
