How their year went
What a year! In their first year in Premier Division, they got off to a rollicking start and ultimately led the competition for most of the year. Qualified straight into the Grand Final and the rest is history- defeating Pennant Hills by 8 points for a historic victory.
What they need
To keep their list together. Have a number of players that will attract attention from rival clubs. A key forward in the David Kovacevic mould would be perfect to help support Hayden Washington.
Shining lights
Tyrone Armitage must lead a long list. The captain provided great leadership and was a deserved winner of the Phelan Medal. Anthony Robertson again had a great year, as did Harrison Koch down back.
Season defining moment
You could name a couple. They announced themselves with authority after a massive Round 1 win against Balmain. They lost three games in a row, hence their Round 13 win against UTS was important to get back on the horse. With the minor premiership on the line, they turned up the heat against North Shore in one of the best performances of the year.
Players on the rise
Like Pennant Hills, their Under 18 (Division Two) side claimed a premiership which means there are a number of quality youngsters knocking on the door of first grade. Of the players who played senior football this year, Thomas Thurgaland was superb off half-back, as was Lachlan Kilpatrick after crossing from North Shore. Watch out for Calum Johnston in the coming years as well.
Grade
A+ - Many first year Premier Division clubs take time to make an impact; normally years, but Manly-Warringah were dogged with their approach and made it clear they wanted to prove people wrong from the outset. Leigh Brain coached the side superbly with a focus on pressure.
2014 prediction
It is hard to see the Wolves falling off the top perch given the growing depth in their list. If they can keep their squad together and if the hunger is there, you must tip them to finish in the top two or three in 2014.
