Inaugural senior coach of the South Burnett Saints, Steve Humbler, has taken out the 2013 Senior Coach of the Year award, announced at Saturday night's Volunteer Recognition Night.
Starting with a blank canvass is often a tough gig, but one which Steve has excelled at. Many of the players in his squad have not played the game in a number of years, or even played the game at all therefore teaching basic skills has been a requirement.
He has also instilled professionalism in the playing group and has developed the beginnings of a strong club culture. Senior players help out with junior sides, even if it's just to spectate as well as turn up to training on time.
Steve has clearly done a number of things right, based on a core group of 35 players being available each week has seen more than 22 players available to play a game. Thanks to Steve's hard work, the club is well on its way to fielding a Reserves side in just their second year of competition in 2014.
Steve has now been nominated as the regional winner for the State Senior Coach of the Year award to be announced in November.
