The AFL Sydney Team of the Year was announced at Phelan Medal Night on Monday.
UNSW/ES midfielder, Max Collett was rewarded for another successful season with the perennial performer being named captain. Collett was vice-captain of the Senior Representative Squad to add to a long football resume.
Neil Brunton was named as Coach of the side by his peers. Brunton is well-respected and has taken his experience from his playing days with the Sydney Swans to the coaching board. In his first year with Campbelltown, he transformed the side from an underperforming unit to one that despite missing finals beat a number of teams higher on the ladder with an attractive brand of play.
Nine players from last year’s Team of the Year were selected again this year.
Eight of the clubs were evenly represented in this year’s Team with Balmain and North Shore having the most representatives (four).
This year’s side featured vice-captain and Phelan Medallist, Tyrone Armitage, and Stan Milton Medallist, Rory Miller.
The Team of the Year was selected by the AFL Sydney Premier Division Coaches, and an Independent Panel, based on the following criteria:
- Players must have played a minimum of seven (7) games as at Round 15;
- The Coaches could not pick players from their own clubs
The selections were based on the following categories with the team to comprise 18 on field players, 4 Interchange Players, Captain, Coach and Umpire:
- Defenders (six (6) players to be chosen)
- Midfielders (eight (8) players to be chosen)
- Forwards (six (6) players to be chosen)
