Warwick Redback's midfielder Kurt Millard has been crowned the 2013 Holman Medallist after storming home from outside the Top 10, to receive the 44th Holman Medal.
After the first nine rounds of counted votes, Millard was only one vote outside the Top 10 after receiving two votes in each of his Round 1, 2 and 7 games. Bradon Behan from South Toowoomba was the early leader on eleven votes but was closely followed by both Christopher Davis (Uni) and Phil Dreise (Coolaroo) on ten votes.
The second half of the season is where Millard came into his own picking up minor votes in Round ten (1), eleven (2), twelve (2) and three maximum vote games in Round fourteen, fifteen and sixteen. Heath Gniel was the other strong finisher but couldn't do enough to stop the rampaging Kurt Millard.
Unfortunately Kurt was unable to attend the evening but Warwick President Keith Clarke spoke on his behalf, mentioning the star Redback had a year off to refresh and came back with a new attitude.
"After a season off Kooka (Kurt) came back a new player, he had a few injuries that led to his year off but he came back bigger and better," President Clarke told the sell out crowd.
"His attitude changed this season, he definitely was alot nicer to the umpires," Clarke chuckled.
Kurt Millard joins the illustrious group of Redback's players to win the Holman Medal including Brendan Iles (2009,2010,2011) and Geoffrey Smith (2003). Kurt Millard finished on 20 votes to take out the Medal in 2013, three clear of runner-up veteran superstar Heath Gniel (University).
Gniel is only the second University player to finish as Runner-Up, joining Paul Kupke the 2008 Holman Medallist who finished second in 2009.
