Regional Umpiring Manager Darren Murphy has won the 2013 AFL Darling Downs Junior League Volunteer of the Year award, announced at last Saturday night's Volunteer Recognition Night.
In just his second year of umpiring, Darren stepped up to the head role, managing all umpire appointments and training sessions. He has continued to build on the strong recruiting foundations laid by previous RUM Wayne Waltisbuhl.
Darren has also helped foster umpire respect and improve the communication channels between umpires & club coaches. Darren accepts calls from coaches to discuss their thoughts on the game, but does not delve into discussions on specific incidents.
By putting up his hand in what is traditionally a very tough role, Darren has handled it all in his stride this season and is undoubtedly a deserving winner of the award.
Darren has now been nominated as the regional winner for the State Junior League Volunteer of the Year award to be announced in November.
Over the next two weeks a feature on each of our volunteer & coach of the year winners will be published on darlingdowns.aflq.com.au
