In a nail biter, the West Coast Hawks turned around a two goal deficit at three quarter time, kicking six goals to one going into the late stages of the final quarter, and looking very much like being the first to qualify for the Grand Final.
As the old saying goes, the small men slow but the big men are still big!, enter Wade O Brien, champion for many years, pulling down two key marks and kicking truly, and Tyler Chapman chipping of the ground in to seal a victory to stir the cockles of the great crowd in attendance.
An arm wrestle all day between the two pace settling clubs of 2013 and a match worthy of the expectation. Interestingly, both clubs will likely strengthen in the coming weeks, Central Eyre without Toby Kelly and Micah VanLoon, and Hawks without Derick Freeman, Brent Bascombe.
The match had it all, high marking, goals, gut running to space and the heavy tackling and pressure that is expected in a final. Good players on both sides, efforts and second efforts in pressure games is what builds and busts reputations, both clubs will be very pleased from that point of view
The Hawks now need to regroup and concentrate their efforts at Piednippe in the Preliminary Final against a Tigers outfit which could cause headaches.
In the Reserves match, the Bombers surged away in the second half to win by 45 points, after only 5 points in the match at half time. Lynton Pym with 6, Corey Cabot 4 and Troy Olsen 3 lead a highly functional forward line as it had been all year. Souring the win was the loss of Montgomerie Medalist Gareth Dudley, with an apparent hamstring. Two weeks to recover just doesnt seem long for a hammy? Hawks willl face a confident Central Eyre in the reserves next week.
The Colts match was won by the West Coast Hawks after a gallant battle with the Wudinna United Magpies. The Hawks were behind at half time but were able to run the game out better, finishing 30 points up. Both sides threw their all at the game and again an entertaining contest between the two. The Maggie front up against the Bulldogs who comfortably beat them in the last minor round, will be quite a challenge for both clubs who are school mates and good friends off the field. Derbies are always the hardest of all!
