Fenech To Part Ways With Heat

FNQ FC Heat Board of Directors thanked Joe Fenech for his tremendous efforts at the club following his decision to move on from the position as interim coach of the NPL Queensland club.

Fenech arrived midway through the Cairns-based NPL club’s inaugural season this year to cover Martin Docherty, who has been attending to a family emergency.

Prior to the appointment with Heat, Fenech was head coach and techincal director of fellow NPL Queensland club CQFC Energy.

“We are extremely grateful for Joe’s service to the club and the game of football in this region in general,” FNQ FC Chairman Adam Garnett said.

Fenech’s coaching qualifications and many decades worth of football experience made his services highly sought-after nationally.

“In the end, as an emerging regional club with a relatively small operations budget we were unable to match the offers he received from southern-based NPL clubs”.

“Installing a NPL Head Coach is one of FNQ FC's off-season priorities and we will be advertising
all FNQ FC coaching positions in the very near future”, Garnett said.

“On behalf of the Heat, and the far northern football community, the directors of FNQ FC wish Joe the best of luck with his future endeavours” Garnett said.

During Fenech's tenure as Interim Coach, several Heat players were selected to trial with A-League clubs Brisbane Roar and Sydney FC; the latter club later signed Heat defender, Darcy McCormack.

In addition to mentoring the club’s NPL squad, Fenech conducted many junior and youth football clinics and visited dozens of schools from Cairns to Tully promoting the sport and positive health messages.

He will remain with the Heat fulfilling these football-development commitments until September 6.

Fenech figured prominantly in FNQ FC's off-field community support philosophy. He and wife, Katherine, actively fundraised for club charity partner, Guide Dogs Queensland.

Fenech was also part of the 'Shave for Rhian' campaign when he shaved his head to help raise funds for FNQ FC Academy player, Rhian Docherty, who is undergoing treatment for cancer.
