Sydney Women's AFL teams have traditionally got behind Pink Sock Round heading into finals to raise money and awareness of women's cancer. Each team donates the profits from the sale of pink socks to players, supporters and others, to the Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation.
The UTS Shamrocks this year will be hosting a BBQ during the Pink Sock women's carnival round to raise additional funds for a cause just as "close to home". Half of the proceeds from food and drink sales will go directly towards the SISTER2sister Program, aimed at providing positive support and guidance to 'at risk' teenage youth by way of mentoring through a female role model who is "matched" to their 'little sister'.
Inspired by Von Eirlys of the team who herself is a mentor with SISTER2sister, the team has chosen to support this program, the impact of which primarily "breaks the cycle of poverty, trauma and suffering for 'at risk' teenage youth". There are "young girls who have had very troubling and unfortunate upbringings that were completely out of their control", says Von of the reality of life for many 'little sisters' of the program.
The sentiment of the team is that it is important to acknowledge that there are young women who aren't as fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy time outdoors and get into sports like AFL that provide a sense of routine and community.
The BBQ will be held at Mahoney Oval, Marrickville on Saturday 10 August in the final home and away round of the Division 2 competition. The matches to be played on the day are:
Randwick City v Auburn Tigers, 9am
UTS Shamrocks v Penrith Ramettes, 11am
Southern Power v Macquarie University, 1pm
Balmain Dockers v UNSW Stingrays (Division 1), 3pm
