The success of the Penrith Rams in recent years has seen good growth within the club with five teams now competing in the AFL Sydney competition.
The club has teams in Divisions One, Three and Five as well as Under 18’s and a Ladies team; the Ramettes. A new administration took over in 2010 which has seen the club participate in five grand finals, being successful in three.
Club stalwart, Greg Corless believes a strong culture has been the recipe for the Rams’ success recently.
“Penrith have based their culture philosophy around vision, value and its people,” he said.
“The introduction last year of a third senior team and the Ramettes has introduced a new dimension to the club culture with many new players in both of these teams embracing the club both on and off the field. The ongoing vision is that all members of Penrith create ownership of the club.
“Former chairman, Kevin Tate, did a sensational job in his three years at the helm, attracting major sponsors and introducing innovative ideas, along with attracting former quality players back to the club until early this year until relocation out of the area and business commitments saw him stand down from his role.
“New chairman, Michael Walker has football credentials longer than a ruckman’s arm and enthusiastically taken on the top job.”
With the vast majority of the committee and board being previously involved with local junior clubs (four of the board members previously being club presidents), strong ties to the local junior clubs is a major priority and this year has seen increased involvement with all four junior clubs with combined training sessions.
“One of the most satisfying aspects is to see players that one has known since Auskick days develop as both players and people,” Corless said.
“An unusual long-term injury list and many player’s travelling overseas this season, it has been a disjointed year in many respects.
“First Grade’s second year in Divison One is on the line in the next few weeks with the team just outside the top five after some inconsistent performances recently. A flag is on offer for any team that reaches the finals this year in such a wide open competition.
“ The Ramettes are the only team assured of finals this year, which is a tribute to their dedication and willingness to perform.
“Like most clubs, Premier Division is our ultimate aim and we believe we can achieve that level. However, there is plenty of hard work to do over the next few seasons to reach that goal. Manly and UTS have both successfully reached that level in the last couple of years.”
