Olympic Prepare For Title Tilt Against Navy

NPL Queensland league leaders Olympic FC will host a friendly match against a select side from docking US Navy vessel USS George Washington Thursday night at Goodwin Park.

The friendly will be a crucial hit-out as the Olympic squad seeks to secure the inaugural NPL Queensland premiership this weekend against Moreton Bay Jets.

The club currently holds an eight point lead atop the table with three games remaining before the top four finals series. Depending on other results, a win this weekend against Jets can secure Olympic the premiership.

The friendly against USS George Washington provides Olympic a chance to return to form after suffering only their second defeat of the season on Saturday, falling 6-3 to Northern Fury in Townsville.

The hit-out also offers the chance of game time for returning quartet Mario Apparicio, Jack Petrie, Nick Efstathis and Shannon Lancini as they seek to regain match sharpness following four week suspensions.

USS George Washington houses two football teams, with the squad representing Carrier Air Wing Five falling to Brisbane Strikers 17-0 on Monday night.

The vessel is a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the largest class of warship ever built, and is manned by a crew of more than 6000 service personnel.

Olympic are the form NPL Queensland senior side in the league’s inaugural season. They currently sit in first position on the competition table – a position they have held since Round 2.
