This Saturday the USQ Cougars will host the 5th annual LJ Hooker Cancer Council Queensland Charity Match when they play the Coolaroo Roos in a top of the table clash at USQ AFL Oval in Toowoomba.
This is the fifth year the Cougars have held the fundraiser, an event which is growing every year. Continuing on from last year’s success, the A Grade fixture will be played as a twilight match beginning at 4:15pm with a full suite of junior fixtures and a Reserves match as a curtain raiser.
The event attracts support from many businesses across the Darling Downs, with every specially designed pink & yellow University guernsey sponsored by a different local business, with all proceeds going to Cancer Council Queensland.
A BBQ will be run throughout the day as well as a large raffle with all proceeds from both going towards the overall donation.
New CFM breakfast announcer Ryan will strap on the boots for the Cougars, playing a celebrity stint as a 19th man. His co-host Hamish last played in the event in 2010 and will no doubt have plenty of tips for the rookie.
Coach of the Cougars A Grade side and organiser of the event, Shane Melrose describes the concept of the event as ‘awesome’. “The event is all about raising awareness for cancer, not only in our football club but right across the community”.
“When I first started this event 5 years ago, we had a number of players families directly affected by cancer. That’s the thing about this event, everyone has a story they can relate to”, said Melrose.
“Last year we were able to donate over $3000 to Cancer Council Queensland, which is a phenomenal effort”.
Despite the novelty of the event, both sides will be going out there with plenty on the line. Coolaroo are so far undefeated in season 2013, while the Cougars have lost just the one match – by 7 points to the Roos in Round 4. The winner will take top spot ahead of the final three rounds of football as both sides look to shore up the minor premiership and a week off in the first week of the finals.
For a full day of football action and to support this great cause head down to the USQ AFL Oval at the university campus this Saturday. Junior matches kick off with the Under 8s & 10s at 8:40am, with the A Grade fixture beginning at 4:15pm.
