The home-and-away season is done and dusted, and for three teams – Diamond Creek, Berwick and VU St Albans – it is curtains closed for 2013. Three low scoring encounters saw finals places earned in the hardest fashion – and going by ladder positions pre-Round 14, there were three somewhat surprising results.
The Sharks led at every change in their must-win clash against Darebin, albeit marginally, and a ten-point win at home and strong finish to the season has seen them deservedly sneak into fourth place. Kate Tyndall and Nicole Degiorgio starred in the win, while Sarah Scheggia and Margie Conley impressed for the Falcons. After this thrilling contest, these two sides will meet again this week in what will hopefully be an equally exciting elimination final.
The Sharks’ win meant heartbreak for two teams tied on the same amount of points – Berwick and Diamond Creek. A few weeks ago, the Hawks had seemingly sewn up a finals berth. But the Demons held them goalless on Sunday afternoon, securing a win – but 19 points was not enough to lift their percentage above St Kilda’s, consigning them to fifth place.
Melbourne Uni and the Eastern Devils also did battle in a low-scoring affair, and would have relished the chance to size up their opponents before they meet in a qualifying final this week. It was the Mugars who prevailed this time around in a game that produced just the three goals – Eugenia Tsiakalakis and Leanne Guinea converting majors to seal an eight-point win.
Congratulations to all teams on their season to date, and best of luck to those who over the next month will be going after the big prize.
