Well footy heads, what an interesting round in Ontario! Two games rescheduled, one due to lightning and another due to a death to a close friend of the Toronto Eagles FC. Thoughts go out to the boys and their families. Here is the Phantom review of Round 8, or what was left of it. Certainly makes my job a little easier this week!
Etobicoke Kangaroos v Toronto Rebels
Game cancelled due to lightning .... really? I will keep my thoughts to myself on this one. Pretty big game for both clubs, would have thought they would both want to play footy! Look forward to finding out when this one is going to be played.
High Park Demons 17.22.124 def Hamilton Wildcats 1.1.7
Well the Demons hadn't won a game since they last beat the Cats and were out in full force to make sure they won this one. The Cats still missing a few key ingredients due to injury, Brett Hill stepped up and was best on and their lone goal kicker.
For the Demons, Quigley kicked 4 goals with Farrelly and Simnett pitching in for 2 goals a piece. Tinglin voted the best of the field for the Demons.
Seems the Demons recent lack of scoring options had no problem finding a kick this week, once again the Cats struggling to put defensive pressure on their opposition.
Phantom sitting 1 from 1 in Round 8.
Broadview Hawks 12.11.83 def Guelph Gargoyles 4.9.33
I predicted two things for this game, first was that it would be match of the round - I think it probably was. Second is that whoever had their best players show on the day would be victors, and that's the way it appears to have turned out.
Guelph were missing their main man in Matty Dean who averages about 4-5 goals every game he plays and started a man down with 17. They were up to 18 for the start of the second quarter, but that was short lived after a red card saw Jacob Martin's day over early.
Robbo was solid in defence but unable to stop the might of Dullard and Shuttleworth who kicked 4 goals each. Pablo Willis was definitely back for the Hawks, making the best with Mohammed taking Best On Ground honours.
Phantom now 1 from 2 in Round 8
Toronto Dingos 12.9.81 def Central Blues 5.11.41
The Blues were without the short man Willsy this week and as predicted, the Blues were lacking the depth to cover the Dingos. The Doc and Snorkel were solid for the Blues and it looks like they are starting to find some forward options with Kentwell kicking 2 goals from their 16 scoring shots.
Big Wade took a back seat to the Craig 'Veteran' Stewart show who kicked 4 goals in his return to the side, allegedly unashamedly keen to get his hands on some leather and going straight for goal. Parish was best on ground again for the Dingos with Shaun McKay a solid contributor. Dingos too strong for the Blues - Phantom now 2 from 3 in Round 8.
Ottawa Swans v Toronto Eagles
Another game cancelled due to unfortunate circumstances - the game to be replayed at a later date. Respect due to Ottawa for not forcing the Eagles to forfeit - an honourable choice.
WOMENS
High Park Demons 11.1.67 def Etobicoke Kangaroos 3.4.22
The Erin Loughnane show came to Humber South on Saturday with her team of Demons and comfortably beat the Roos with a 6 goal effort from the star.
Some excellent straight kicking from the Demons, Erin was well supported by McNulty, Connor, Czyzo, Gregg and Davidson who all kicked singles.
The Roos fought hard with Silvie and Sharna featuring in the Best Players and Goal kickers, but the Dees were too strong in the end despite having fewer numbers than the Roos.
Phantom 1 from 1 in the Women's Division
Hamilton Wildcats 12.14.86 def Central Blues 0.1.1
The Hamilton girls went on a rampage on Saturday morning and systemically pounded the Blues girls with a 14 goal win.
Their men's side should consider bringing a few of the girls over as they can definitely defend as well as kick goals! Jodie Fluit kicked a game high 6 goals while Heil pitched in with 3 goals.
The Blues ladies once again out with strong numbers, but unable to put the score on the board.
Phantom 2 from 2 this round in the Women's Division
And there you have the shortest round this season! The AFL Ontario executive will no doubt be busy re-scheduling for this round during the week. Make sure to head back before the weekend to see who I've picked to take the honors in round 9.. Until then, keep kicking!
