In this week’s game of the round Coolaroo host the Goondiwindi Hawks in a historic game for the Allied Pickford’s Cup as this will be the first ever senior AFL game played in Pittsworth (Bridgeman Oval 2:30pm).
The link with Pittsworth highlights the relationship these 2 clubs have been able to establish over recent years. Our hats go off to the Coolaroo FC who are giving up their home ground advantage as well as donning the senior Pittsworth strip for this game in an effort to increase the reach of AFL within the Pittsworth community.
The last time these teams met back in round 8 the undefeated Roos came away with a 52 point victory but were at times pushed by the vastly improved Hawks outfit. Rudolph was the main destroyer for Coolaroo in this game with a handy 6 majors while he received good support from athletic soccer convert Michael Casey who booted 4 goals of his own. For the Hawks Holman Medal favourite David O’Toole was kept relatively quiet with just the 2 majors while classy forward / on baller Jeremy Leahy chipped in with 3.
The Hawks certainly weren’t disgraced by competition leaders Coolaroo in this game and are coming off the back of a stirring come from behind victory against cross town rivals Warwick last week. The worry for Nick Barker’s men will be that the Roos haven’t been challenged over the past 2 weeks with a comfortable victory against Chinchilla and the bye the week previous being their form lines leading into this game.
Goondiwindi may have more to play for here given their battle with Warwick for the 5th and final remaining finals position. Overall this should be a great game and a superb way to showcase the game of AFL to the broader community of Pittsworth.
In other games the 2 expansion clubs in Chinchilla and the South Burnett will host games this week against Highfields and Warwick respectfully. The Toowoomba Tigers will begin to make their push toward a 4th consecutive premiership as they host the Dalby Swans at Rockville Oval. And rounding out this week’s games has University looking to fine tune their structures against the Lockyer Valley Demons a week before their top of the table clash with Coolaroo. South Toowoomba has the bye.
