Well Footy Heads, I am back again with the game reviews from Round 7 and what an interesting round of footy in Ontario!
I nearly went all the way with 6 correct picks from 6 games, until the Eagles let me down! Bit of a surprise upset there, but they still sit fairly comfortable on top of the table! Here goes with my review of the games from Round 7..
Toronto Dingos 9.15.69 def High Park 5.9.39
Phantom prediction for this game was the Dingos by 5 goals and that it was! The Dingos, missing 'old man' Stewy again, dominated the Demons who once again, struggled to put any real pressure on the scoreboard.
Big Wade was strong up forward for the Dingos, kicking 3 goals although by all reports he could have kicked 10 if he had kicked straight. Yoni was best on ground for the Dingos and well supported by Max Parrish. Dingos are back in the winner’s circle.
Loughnane and Kelly were as always, strong for the Demons and Doggett kicked a couple of goals but their depth is just not quite there. That should take my advice and maybe get some tips from their women’s squad.
Phantom 1 from 1 in Round 7
Broadview Hawks def Hamilton Wildcats by Forfeit
It was always going to be a tough road trip for the Cats but it is never a good thing for football to see a team forfeit. Word is that with a lot of injuries in the Cats ranks and some unavailability's they had no choice but to forfeit the game.
Possibly a little bit unfortunate for the Hawks too who missed a percentage boost from the game. Let’s hope the Cats have some numbers back on the track next week!
Phantom 2 from 2 in Round 7.
Guelph Gargoyles 12.9.81 def Etobicoke Kangaroos 9.9.63
This was one of those matches that could have gone either way and one tip that I was sweating on. The Roos had been on a roll heding into the clash and the Gargoyles were trying to get their season moving in the right direction.
The Matty Dean show continued on its merry way on Saturday in Guelph, with a big 7 goal haul and a Best On Ground performance from the young gun. He was well supported by his coach Kerm Matthews who kicked 3 goals and also by Josh Bentley.
The Roos were a little undermanned and never gave in until the final siren rang. Chippa and Emile kicked 3 each and Haesler added 2 for the Roos but they couldn't get over the line, with the Gargoyles finishing them off in the last quarter and moving up the ranks in the finals race.
Phantom 3 from 3 in Round 7!
Toronto Rebels 8.8.56 def Toronto Eagles 3.4.22
The match of the round turned out to be the shock of the round in this Phantom's eyes. The previously undefeated Eagles took on a Rebels side who had just come back from Ottawa with only half the points.
In a game to be televised on Rogers TV the first half was a pretty tough and competitive one with the scores all tired up. But the Eagles were overrun and only managed to put 1 behind on the scoreboard for the entire second half as the Rebels kicked 5.4 at Humber South.
For the Reb’s Bodnar was solid with 4 goals for the Rebels as their best players were headed by Osborne, Love and Behie. After a win like that their back on track for the season.
Last week I foolishly labelled the Eagles the 'Real Deal' last week but considering they’ve kicked 1 behind in the last quarter against the Dingos, and 1 behind in a half against the Rebels, I’m not only questioning their coaching but also their fitness.
No Runnalls in the side could possibly be a factor, but two poor performances by the Hamburglar up forward would be more concerning. Still their 6 and 1 for the season but a lot of work to be done in my opinion.
Phantom 3 from 4 in Round 7.
Central Blues 10.10.70 def Ottawa Swans 4.8.32
The second game recorded by Rogers TV was fairly tight in the first half but the Blues really pulled away in the second half as the Swans struggled to convert.
Inaccurate kicking meant the Swans let the Blues off the hook and Roffey being held goalless on the day didn’t help either. Shaughnessy was back in the side and along with Woods worked hard although they were missing Strom and Kozlowski who are keys to their side.
The Blues were lead well up forward and around the ground by ‘Mighty Mouse’ Willsy who was in the best as usual. Also up forward ‘The Doc’ was solid with 3 goals along with Lock who also converted 3 goals.
While tightly contested, the Blues were too strong for the visitors in the end and securing their second win for the season.
Phantom 4 from 5 in Round 7
WOMEN
Ottawa Swans 12.15.82 def Central Blues 1.2.8
The Ladies from Ottawa came down and really turned it on in their first hit out against the Blues for the year. Dominating the play and not giving the Blues an inch, the Swans pounded the score board to take their first win of the season.
Kirsten Bodashefsky was a clear Best on Ground kicking 6 goals for the Swans with Emma Dickinson all over the field kicking 2 goals. Holly Costanza another solid performer for the Swans.
The Blues lone goal scorer was Kelly-Witt but the better players on the day were Jen Nicholls and Renee Tong who continued to fight to get the ball forward.
Phantom 1 from 1 in the Women's Division - 5 from 6 for the Round
That's all for this week Footy Heads! I see on Twitter that Rogers TV will be televising the games recorded from Round 7 this coming Saturday at 6pm and 8pm in Toronto and Scarborough regions. Will be setting the PVR at Skull Cave to record for the two games for sure! Until next time...
