Shady punter is back with another mid-season review, this time lending his expertise on the Eagles State of affairs after 4 Rounds of footy.
Position: 3rd. West Island Eagles (next opponent Old Montreal Dockers)
After a tremendous first game against the Demons, West Island failed to repeat in the re-match last week. In fact, it was pretty much the exact same game except for the roles being reversed. Superb interventions from Matt James Davidson were not enough to compensate a lack of discipline and team tactics that could only be justified perhaps by the amount of new players on the team. Eagles should be able to correct these flaws by the end of the year once everybody has a better feel of the game, especially with leaders like Margo Legault and Matty Payne showing the way.
In terms of new Eagle blood this year, Eagles managed to grab Cesar Cordoba, who proved to have the receiving skills of David Tyree combined with the speed of Usain Bolt, and all their other rookies have contributed in making West Island one of the most athletic and exciting team to watch. Overall, Eagles play has been a bit inconsistent though, the only recurring aspect being a wide margin in each game, whether winning or losing. Therefore we don’t know yet if they have what it takes to win a close game. With the Demons and Dockers currently on fire, this shady punter expects Laval and West Island to finish 3rd and 4th respectively and to face off against each other in the final series with the loser eliminated.
Next Game: Key to match-up against the Dockers: The first ranked team was able to get that many wins by constantly controlling the game pace with efficient long marks all over the field. If the Eagles can manage to keep the game fast paced and moving, their superior athletic skills should help them to prevail. Players like Samuel “Mean Machine” St Lawrence and Marc ‘If you are in my way, you better get the f### out of my way’ St Germain will have to contribute in the toughness aspect, as long as it stays in the rulebook of course. Give away cheap free kicks against Old Montreal and you’re in trouble with the Old Port men having a bunch of elite kickers who can score from all over the ground.
The availabilities of Kempster and Manny (both who missed the Demons game) are imperative to an Eagles success. Eagles need to win and if they have a full complement of players then they will. Eagles by 3 goals.
