This weekend, the South Burnett Saints will flash back to their past, by hosting their inaugural ‘Heritage Day’.
The Kingaroy Bulldogs played in the AFL Darling Downs competition on and off from 1982 through to 2006, while their junior affiliate the Kingaroy-Nanango Jets played their last match in 2009.
For a number of years, no opportunities to play the Indigenous game existed in the region, with only a couple of keen players making the 2 hour trek to play in Toowoomba.
When planning for the new club began, recognising the past was one item which was right near the top of the list.
“Finding a way to involve all of the past players, even those who can no longer take the field is a very important aspect to ensure the success of our club,” explains club President Daniel Clacy.
“We recognise the hard work they did to promote the game in the past. Without them, we probably wouldn’t have a club to play for now”.
On the field, the juniors begin at 9:45am, with the big match beginning at 2:30pm versus the Warwick Redbacks at Kingaroy’s Lyle Vidler Oval. The Saints will be keen to show everyone they can rebound after their big loss to University, while the Redbacks will be desperate to remain in the finals hunt after a narrow loss to Goondiwindi last weekend.
A photo montage of matches past will be on display, while all past players, volunteers and supporters are encouraged to share past memories and help create new ones.
Local band Stunt Pig will again be performing after the A Grade match has concluded.
