All Club Basketball takes a two week break during the holidays while a number of rep teams are off around the country to various National and Mainland tournaments

 

 

GREAT BASKETBALL SCOREBENCH

Scorebench training cannot start early enough is the opinion of ‘Nana’ Faith Harrison so on Saturday when it was time for her son David (Gators MP Coach) to supply duty for the next Women’s Premier game between her daughter’s team Gators (Rachel) up against University she quickly organised three of her grand-children to assist. In being asked whether they could handle to job she replied that all she needed was one from the other duty team Atami so Rusty Thompson volunteered and what a bench it was, no complaints were received and the referees where more than satisfied.

Faith did the difficult shot clock and Rusty managed the scoresheet while her grandchildren, 8 year Tom Harrison (Father - Andrew) did a wonderful job on the game clock with some prior training, another 8 year old Harry Weston (Mother Anna Harrison) was sharp and on the alert with the batons while his brother 5 year old Ethan Weston managed the lights.

Men’s Premier Championship

 

Hoben trophy winner Atami tightened its grip on the Men’s Premier club basketball championship race with a sound 87-60 win over another championship contender Gators in Cowles stadium on Saturday. The lowly placed defending champion Checkers was reinforced by the return of  Ethan Rusbatch from NBL duties with the Taranaki Mountain Airs but the steadily improving University outplayed Checkers 92-85 but only after repulsing a strong last-quarter fightback by Checkers. Checkers have protested the result after it lost the energetic Pip Johnston on five fouls in a crucial period, maintaining he had only received four during the game. In the other game a hyped up Wolverines thumped a lack-lustre Lincoln University 105-83.

 

Atami beat a lack-lustre Gators 87-60

Atami march relentlessly on edging ahead of a lack-lustre Gators 17-14 by quarter-time and exploded to a 43-24 half-time lead through the efforts of sharp shooter Rusty Thompson while the former Canterbury Ram Paul McFarlin marshalled Atami with great ease.

Former Tallblack Jeremy Kench made a rare appearance for Gators but that failed to bring the usually busy Gators into life. Kaye McKee and Jordan Duggan where kept from the boards while only Alex Jellie (14) and Chris Duthie (12) managed to break the tight Atami defence and Duthie was forced into eight uncharacteristic turnovers. Sam Dobbs and Ritchie Howell added to Atami’s dominance as Atami pulled clear in the third-quarter while honours where even in the final period. Atami got 25 against 15 points off the bench and forced 23 points from Gators turnovers and shot more accurately, sinking 31/63 (49%) to Gators 37%.

 

 

Checkers failed to gain control as University pipped them 92-85

Checkers struggled to gain control as University put together its strongest team effort this season, leading 25-17 at quarter-time and 44-40 at the turn around. Brent Fisher controlled the boards for the students with 33 points and 19 rebounds, his best effort to date while Matt Campbell stepped up adding a vital 21 points. Rusbatch was a marked man limited to 15 points while Nat Connell showed many subtle moves as he drew fouls, scoring a remarkable 23 points for Checkers. Checkers closed the gap several times in the second spell but the students kept drawing away and the loss of the speedy Johnston made life difficult for the Checkers to complete the comeback.

 

Wolverines thumps Lincoln University 105-84.

Wolverines with a strong team display and backed up by a vocal bench made no race of its encounter with Linclon University, racing to a 27-15 first quarter lead and 58-37 by half-time. Lincoln came back in the third period through the busy efforts of Aled Jones (14 points, six assists and five steals) while Manuel Nunez-Tenasque (17 and 10 rebounds) was in strong support.  Pat Fraser set the Lincoln’s moves but Wolverines had him well covered and restricted to 15 points as was Nick Erwood limited to just eight points.

The Premier boys got off to a dominating start against Lincoln
University as they went out to separate the men from the boys.
Mike Kinley (21pts, 5reb and 5 steals) and Oli Davies (17pts, 3 steals) were unstoppable as they raced out to a 27-15 1st qtr lead.The 2nd qtr saw super sub James Levings (16pts, 4assists) come out and hit 4/5 3pters and 6 of 7 from the field as the half ended with the pack up 58-37. Lincoln University came back with a bit of fight in the 3rd winning the qtr 27-20 but in the end the wolfpack were too strong winning 105-84.

Women’s Premier Championship

 

Patron’s trophy winner Halswell challenged championship leader Minties after a slow start to win the top-of-the- table encounter in the Women’s Premier grade, winning 63-56 while Pioneer bounced back from last week’s loss to Gators to edge out Lincoln University 45-44. The defending champion University got its game back together but was strongly challenged by Gators before edging clear in the second half 53-40 having led narrowly 22-20 at half-time.

 

Halswell better second half sees it beat Minties 63-56

Minties has been struggling all season with a consistant performance, running thin at times but the energetic  Gemma Hazeldene got her side underway with a string of baskets through sluggish Halswell defence. Minties edged ahead 17-13 at the first break but new Canterbury Wildcat Lori McDaniel muscled inside Minties to keep Halswell in touch. Both sides tightened their defence in the second quarter as baskets came had to come by with another Wildcat Italian Cecillia Zambrini slipping in a couple of baskets after extensive build up moves. Lauren Mangan and Karla Martin made some positive moves for Minties but decent shots were had to come by.

Halswell upped the tempo in the second spell after trailing 24-25 at the break with McDaniel drawing the fouls and sinking shots from the charity line. Two former Wildcats Anna Williams and Bridget Salkeld added to Halswell’s strengths as they slowly tightened its grip on the game. Sally-Anne Tull and Wildcat Hayley Gray plugged away to try and rescue the game for Minties but Halswell maintained in control.

 

University repells Gators challenge to win 53-40

Gators showed more confidence after last week’s first up win pulling ahead of the defending champion University 10-7 at quarter-time through the efforts of Marnie Block and Sam Duggan. Ro Katene, a Canterbury Wildcat led her young University charges well, setting the moves and driving the lanes as University edged ahead 22-20 at half-time. Teenage national representative Laken Wairau (15) produced a strong display to lead the students efforts in the second spell forcing Gators to foul to stop her and she punished them from the charity line.

Kimberley Heron (15) tried to regain the momentum for Gators while the hard working Rachel Harrison worked the moves with little success as University maintained an edge in the second spell.

 

Pioneer pips Lincoln University 45-44

Pioneer continued their steadily improving efforts to come from behind to edge ahead of Lincoln University to win narrowly 45-44, Lincoln’s second loss in as many weeks.

Steph Ching forced her way inside the Pioneer defence to get Lincoln on the scoreboard and with support from Lough sisters, Becky and and Bernice Lincoln inched ahead 12-11 by quarter-time. Pioneer responded through the efforts of Harriet Hlavac (11) and Letitia Stenberg (14) while Connie Dick set the Pioneer moves.

Hannah Turton (12) added good baskets as Lincoln extended its lead to 22-19 by the half-time break while Becky Love extended the early lead for Lincoln after the break. Former Wildcat Stacey Hickford added much depth to the Pioneer challenge in the second spell, giving Pioneer the confidence to attack more strongly. Basket for basket flowed in the second spell while Pioneer finished strongly to sneak home for the upset win.

Men’s Division One

 

Two arch-rivals went head to head on Sunday with double defending champion Placemakers Wolves coming out a narrow victor over Wolverines 67-62 while the University pounded Pioneer Blue 83-39 through the efforts of Christ Grant running end for end, slotting 22 points, James Lissaman (20) and Sam Botting also with 20 points.

 

HSOB should have thumped Checkers but Checkers was really determined to make the top division but was narrowly beaten by the Old Boys 62-64. Regular campaigner Martin Maunsell chipped in with 20 points, and contributed the deciding play, by receiving a long outlet pass when Checkers went 0-2 at the FT line, finishing the layup, and converting it for a three-point play with only 5 seconds remaining. This turn of events suddenly saw Checkers going from up one, to down two – where they missed a potentially game tying shot at the buzzer. Checkers, playing without the services of Bob Weatherford, had Michael Young (21) and Alastair Cossart (19) producing solid displays.

 

The grade now divides into Top six and bottom four when it re-commences on August 4^th with Placemakers Wolves and Atami sharing the first round competition on 19 points from 9W-1L closely followed by Wolverines and University with 8W-2L and 18 points, these teams being closely locked in completion over the last 5-6 seasons. HSOB on 16 points and Checkers (14) sneak into the top section after North Canterbury lost competition points in an earlier game against Gators, effectively dropping North Canterbury to the bottom section.

 

Placemakers Wolves edges Wolverines 67-62

Play maker and sharp shooter, chief cook and bottle washer Jamie Graham reports.

Failure to box out and turnovers cost the Wolverines Div 1 boys dearly in their top of the table clash with reigning champs the Wolves. John McDonald was a handful for the pack as he dominated the offensive glass scoring 22pts while the Costley brothers, Fraser and Gareth, caused Wolverines further troubles. 
Nick Purcell (18pts), Carl Willocks (15pts) and Jamie Graham (13pts) helped keep the game close but the Wolves showed why they have dominated the competition for the past 5 years as they picked off careless turnovers down the stretch for easy baskets as the Wolverines lost 67-62, only their second loss of the season.

Men’s Under 23 Championship

 

The grade broke out into a Top four and bottom five with Checkers and University the strongest sides in the bottom group who will be seeking to eliminate the other two likely contenders, North Canterbury and Royals while Pioneer has little chance of break back into the elimination play-offs on August 31 unless it can overcome Royals a second time. However the defending champion Checkers only fronted with four players within the allowable five minutes and lost its game against University by forfeit.

 

Gators cleans out Wolverines 70-50

The U23's lost only their second game of the season to Gators, the same team that inflicted the first. The boys started off a little slow but power house Kieran Ball led the
comeback with strong moves around the basket. He was also a beast on the
boards as the Gators struggled to contain him. Then midway through the 2nd qtr Kieran went over on his ankle, dislocating it and potentially ending his season. It was a huge blow to team morale as the boys struggled to fill the void as they got pounded
on the boards as Gators won 70 - 56.
The boys wish Kieran all the best for a speedy recovery.

CBA U23 Reports – Round 11

 

Gators v Wolverines (70 – 50)

A serious injury to Wolverines centre, Kieran Ball, marred a somewhat comfortable victory for Gators over second placed Wolverines, 70 - 50. Early medical reports suggest a dislocated ankle for Ball, with no scheduled timetable for his return, leaving the Wolves side with cult hero Hitesh Pratap as the only centre left due to the departure of US based Michael Karena and impending amnesty of Will Lovell. Gators led throughout the game, with shooter Jordan Duggan (16), centre Jamin Thomas (16) and Jozef Knottenbelt (11) all reaching double figures. For Wolverines, slashing guard Oli Davies added 13, while consistent performer James Levings notched up 11 points.

 

Lincoln University v Atami (70 – 66)

Lincoln University only won one quarter, but it was enough to overcome a gallant Atami fight back to win, 70 – 66. After falling behind by 15 points at the end of the first, Atami, led by an outstanding effort from shooting guard Cam ‘Super Mario’ Chalmers (31 points, 12/21 FG) clawed their way back into the game. Atami point guard Bryn McLennan chipped in with 11 points as both he and Chalmers played the full 40mins, but the deficit of 9 entering the fourth was just too much as LU held on for the victory. For Lincoln, the starting five did most of the damage with four of them reaching double figures – Nick ‘Nerwood’ Erwood (19pts, 10reb), Aled Jones (13pts, 10reb), Pat Fraser (12pts) and Vinnie George (10pts). Joe King and Isaac ‘Stretch’ Williams added 8 points each for the Bulls.

 

Varsity v Checkers (20 – 0, Forfeit Win)

Checkers could only muster up four players against an enthused Varsity outfit, eager to avenge their earlier season loss. As per FIBA rule 9.3, “the game cannot begin if one of the teams is not on the playing court with five players ready to play”, Varsity won the game by Forfeit.

 

North Canterbury v Pioneer (62 – 35)

North Canterbury eased past Pioneer, 62 – 35, as they evened up the season series 1-1. A balanced effort got the job done for NC, as swingmen Scott Edwards (13), Chris Pugh (12), Angus Forbes (10) and trigger shooter Liam Connelly (10) all hit double digits. Unfortunately for Pioneer, only Drew Doak provided any form of resistance with 9 points. This result puts Pioneer in a precarious position as, in order to have chance to compete for the Top 6, they are likely to need to win the next two games against defending champs Checkers, and Varsity. It puts NC in a solid position as they only need one more victory to secure a place in the Bottom Four playoff.

Men’s Under 20  

 

In a day with several upsets a number of the ‘Top seven’ fell victims to lower placed teams but the race for the final Top 8 berth could now rest on the game between Rangiora High and the running hot St Andrews College when the competition resumes on August 3^rd after a school holiday break, a new innovation in Canterbury basketball programme.

MGG remains the only unbeaten side while Boys High draws level with the defending champion Burnside with 9-2. Cashmere High, North Canterbury and Lincoln High share 4^th place with 8-3 while Wolverines slips down to 7^th on 7-4. Rangiora High, St Andrews and Gators 5-6 hang grimly on to the 8^th spot and four more rounds to play.

 

Stac’s  Zac De Roo sunk Burnside 73-72 as the hooter sounded

There will be some really deep sole-searching among Joe Hammond and his Burnside high team as they ponder what went wrong on Saturday as Zac De Roo sunk a coolly taken 3 pointer right from in front of the Burnside boards with only 1.1 seconds on the clock, the ball sailing through the hoop as the hooter sounded and the watching stadium crowd erupted as St Andrews pipped the defending champion 73-72. Another stadium stopping moment.

 

A proud Assistant Stac Coach and trainee journalist Hitesh Pratap takes up the story:

The Men’s U20 competition provided one of the most exciting and dramatic games of the weekend as the underdog St Andrew’s College team took on defending champions, Burnside High School. A closely fought battle from the get go, Burnside took the early lead through some inspired play by star guard Shou Nisbet, netting three triples on his way to a game-high 24 points. St Andrew’s continued to pound the ball inside, with Nick Symon (22pts, 14R) using his size and strength to dominate the Burnside interior defence, while solid contributions from youngsters Ben Collerton (16pts) and Jayden Chan (15pts), along with efforts from captain Zak De Roo (11pts), allowed St Andrew’s to stay alive during the second half.

 

The fourth quarter was full of multiple lead changes, with both teams struggling to pull away. This carried on until the final minute, with the game tied at 70-70, and Burnside with possession. Burnside managed to put up a contested three-point attempt with their final possession, with St Andrew’s successfully defending the shot and forcing the miss. However a missed weak-side box out resulted in an offensive rebound and put-back lay-up by stand-out sharpshooter Kyle Louis (11pts) with only 1.1 seconds remaining on the clock, causing an eruption from the crowd and putting Burnside up 2. St Andrew’s through coach Pina Lissaman were forced to use back-to-back time-outs in order to draw up a play for one final possession. With Cowles Stadium silenced in anticipation, St Andrew’s inbounded the ball to their leader, Zak De Roo, who rose to the occasion and knocked down a deep triple, much to the excitement of the crowd, stunning the Burnside team and pulling off one of the most exciting finishes of the 2013 CBA season thus far. The result at this point in the season can possibly be viewed as an upset, however St Andrew’s have begun hitting their stride with another recent strong outing against the unbeaten Middleton Grange, were the Gators only scraped passed StAC by one point. Final score: 73-72. ELCH!!

Our defense was awful due to fatigue from our core players, who were tired from their other commitments this week. My mistake was not playing our bench much, much more. Their big guy (Nick Symon 22 pts)was an absolute beast, he scored constantly during game and Jayden Chan (17) got hot at times. So nice work from them and Pina (Lissaman) is a great coach.

 

Middleton Grange Gators defeats Cashmere HS 77-53

The Middleton Grange Gators maintained its unbeaten record in the Under 20 competion with another solid team effort through the efforts of Zach Lilburne (16) and  Regan Burnett (13) while Ihaka Pink (14) returned after recent appendix surgery to add depth to Middleton’s efforts. Cashmere replied through the efforts of Kyle Tikao (16) while George Love and Joemar Altabano were kept under close attention by the roving Middleton defence. Middleton led comfortably 20-8 at the first break but Tikao and Love restored the balance for Cashmere in an evenly matched second quarter. After leading 36-25 at the turnaround Pink, a national junior rep, exploded in the second half, slotting a string of baskets to take his tally to 20 points and extending Middleton’s lead to a comfortable win

 

North Canterbury thumps St Bedes College by a massive 108 points to 46

The North Canterbury Men’s Under 20 basketball side consolidated its top eight placing in the Bishopdale YMCA, thumping St Bedes College by a massive 108 points to 46 with  Lawson Morris-Whyte again king of the boards with a classey 49 points. Jordan De Winter played a key role in mopping up any lose ball, grabbing 17 points while Jarrod Satherley improved on recent efforts to notch 10 points. North Canterbury has advanced to a share of 4^th place with Cashmere High and Lincoln College (three losses apiece) on 19 points. Ben Hood and Lauchie Weston toiled long and hard for Bedes against the much taller North Canterbury players and held North Canterbury 25-24 in the third quarter as Morris-Whyte was rested.

 

Rangiora High upsets the more highly ranked Wolverines 73-61

Rangiora High also improved its chances of making the top eight cut off when it upset the more highly ranked Wolverines 73-61, one of a number of upsets among the top Under 20 sides including St Andrews College upsetting the defending champion Burnside High with a last gasp basket as the hooter sounded to win 73-72.

Rangiora led out strongly against Wolverines to led 29-20 at the first break through the efforts of Barclay Millar (17) and Will Morris-Whyte, 22 points. Wolverines came back in the second quarter with Chris Johnstone forced to shoot from behind the arc, landing several threes to trail Rangiora 42-46 at the break but the play making skills of Riley Block enabled Rangiora to extend its lead in the third period before rounding out a good win.

 

This game also marked the officiating debut of Rusty Thomson, who had an excellent manner when interacting with the coaches. Rusty was heard afterwards stating that he’d be happy to continue his officiating career, and stated that he found it easy due to his background playing, and coaching, basketball. Christchurch Boys HS defeats Pioneer Pacers 83-52

 (Nathan Campbell (27) with support from Andre Tamagushiku (15) pulled away to an early 22-11 lead against Pioneer Pacers. Pioneer responded with consistant effort but lacked accuracy a vital times and fell further behind, trailing 19-44. Scott Ralston and Joshua continued the Boys high efforts in the second spell.

 

Lincoln High thumps Christ’s College 99-62

Christ’s College didn’t let the awesome power of Lincoln High worry it as it punched far above its weight through the concentrated efforts of Harry Beadel (15) and Nic Crenshaw as the matched Lincoln’s efforts about the boards. Beadel in particular out jumped the Lincoln defence to put back numerous baskets while Louis Mann added to the Christs efforts. Once possession was lost James Cawthorn carved through the College  defence to slip in 16 points for Lincoln but the momentum slowed in the second quarter as Christs continued to defend strongly. After leading 29-21 at quarter-time Stuart Erskine took control and ran in a mammoth 59 points for Lincoln from all around the court.

 

Gators defeats Aranui Academy 61-42

After a tight first half and leading 33-24 Gators slowly got on top of Aranui with a strong third-quarter through the efforts of Oliver Carron (19) and Harry Smit with 14points. Jarvis Ataera replied with a steady 16 points for the Academy.

 

Shirley Spartens 72  Papanui High  64

Papanui took the early iniative against Shirley to lead 19-13 at quarter-time through the regular efforts of Taylor Britt (38) and backed up by Benji Gray. Steve Chambers (12) and Jake Simpson (10) helped Shirley turn the game around with stronger efforts in the second and fourth quarters. After trailing 33-36 at the break Britt used his advanced ball skills to run in some impressive baskets and when fouled, made Shirley pay from the charity line. Papanui edged ahead 51-48 by the last break but Patrick Roger and Will Grocott combined to restore the game in Shirley’s favour.

Boy’s Under 17

 

In the opening round of the U17 top six section where points start afresh, Middleton green had much better teamwork from Shirley Pacers with Amosa Faitaua-Nanai 18, Barclay Miller 15 and Sach Faigan 14 standing out but tight defence kept Shirley from the boards. Later in the game Will Grocott and Patrick Rodger found some small gaps to support Shirley’s cause.

The defending champion Burnside White bounced back from an upset U20 loss to St Andrew’s earlier in the day as it raced to a 25-6 first quarter lead, Kyle Louis (16) drilling a number of good baskets. Kazuki Tsukjii (19) kept the momentum rolling in the second period as Burnside extended its lead to 45-29 with Ben Collerton was the only St Andrews U17 player to reach double figures.

Later in the game Oliver Fairbrother shrugged off the disappointment to drill 16 points as Burnside pulled steadily clear.

In the other top six encounter Christchurch Boys High had its work cut out to repulse a strong challenge from Burnside Green. After narrowly leading 19-17 at the first break Boys High had to fend off a strong fighting finish from Burnside, scrapping home 66-63.

A second Lincoln team has joined the competition to make up numbers in the bottom group, which saw the coaching debut of Lincoln University Captain Aled Jones,  but was edged out by a steadily improving Papanui High team, losing 82-84 in overtime.

Women’s Division One/Under 20

 

Royals remained the only unbeaten team in the combined grade as it drew to a close, thumping arch-rival Halswell 79-32. Candice Costley was putting back the clock running in 32 points with strong drives with support from Jo Casey and Pina Lissaman both scoring in the twenties.

 

University is likely to finish in second when it plays a catch-up game as it edged clear of the older Minties line-up 48-42. Rangi Ruru which overwhelmed Pioneer Pacers 92-55 through the efforts of Tessa Peck (29) leads the WU20 section. The points from games between teams from the same grade carry forward into the second round when competition resumes on 4^th August.

Mid-week Men

 

The competition had divided into a top and bottom six for another round robin, so here are the top six events of the week. The grade takes an enforced two week break over the holidays, a somewhat new experience for the mid-week competition.

 

University comes from behind to beat Raiders 47-40

Derek Watson (Raiders organizer), who has been playing in the Mid-week competition for 20 years sent in his report on the encounter against arch-rival and defending champion University

University staged what must be the comeback of the season to date. The Raiders came out shooting in the first half and knocked down the majority of their shots as well as defending nicely. This had them leading University by 17 points at half time. University used the halftime break to compose themselves and then turned the tables completely.

With three minutes to go Raiders still held the lead by one point but conceded back to back turn overs and had to resort to fouling to stop the clock and force the turnover.

David Baird went to the line and shot 4/4 which put the game firmly in University’s control.

 

Checkers White repulses The Bishops challenge 94-78

Checkers White with the maestro Nigel Buchanan (28) playing his fiddle (Editors note – I have no idea what this is meant to imply) and backed up by coaching legend Terry Brunel (14) along with a cameo from the veteran Jim Du Rose (14) and too much fire-power for ‘The Bishops.’ Simon Megget splashed in 38 points from all around while Jack McDougall got free of his marker to slot 20 points. Checkers had edged out to a 47-41 lead at the turnaround but edged slowly ahead as Buchanan tightened the knot.

 

Burnham 44 Bandits 36

The Bandits started strongly through the dazzling display of skills from Nelson Santos (15) but the strong Burnham side hung close through the efforts of Ben Shaw and Nick Collinson while man mountain Vince Van Dorn swept the defensive boards clean. After trailing 20-21 at the break Burnham applied pressure through the efforts of Brad Fraser and Vince Lawford running the ball at speed every chance they got, slowly edging ahead. The Ben Flintoft led Bandits hung in close for a long time after the break but Burnham had too much depth and height

 

Royals pips Goauld 45-44.

In a bottom six encounter competition was very keen as Royals and Goualds went toe to toe for the whole hour, Royals holding a 22-21 half-time advantage and holding off a strong challenge to sneak home by one. Master chef Scott Nugent controlled play for Royals while Alex Field led the attack for the deaf club team.
