Players Banned following Code of Conduct Breach
Football Federation Australia (FFA) today imposed suspensions and fines on six players for betting on a Brisbane Silver Boot pre-season match in February this year.
The players, four from Brisbane Olympic FC and two from Rochedale Rovers, were found to be in breach of the National Code of Conduct following an investigation into a number of bets placed on a pre-season cup match.
Each player is suspended for four matches and will face fines of between $200 and $1,000.
The matter was brought to the attention of FFA by a betting agency following betting on a pre-season cup match between Brisbane Olympic FC and Rochedale Rovers on 12 February 2013 by a group of players from the two participating clubs.
“FFA was contacted by a betting agency regarding information it held on betting activity on a match by a group of players from the two clubs,” said FFA Head of Legal, Business Affairs and Integrity, Jo Setright.
“The integrity of football in Australia is a matter of great importance and FFA takes compliance with the National Code of Conduct in this area very seriously.
“Three of the players participated in the match. While this is not a case of match-fixing, all six individuals were in clear breach of the Code prohibiting betting on matches and have been sanctioned, each with a four match suspension and fines ranging from $200 to $1,000 based on the level of league they play in.
“This incident shows that FFA’s detection methods work and FFA will enforce the Code through our rigorous integrity measures.”
The four match suspensions come into effect immediately with all players ineligible to play in their upcoming four league matches.
