Below is the club's report from the day.
The Goanna’s annual Sponsors and Old Boys day is already the biggest day on the club’s calendar. Past players gather to share a beverage and reminisce about the glories of years past, a crowd that includes 1982 Goannas Best & Fairest and former Australian Cricket Captain Mark ‘Tubby’ Taylor.
This year’s day was made even bigger with a visit from GWS coach and AFL legend Kevin Sheedy. The Goannas and Giants have shared an excellent relationship over the years, with the Giants utilising Gipps Road Oval as a training base for their pre-seasons. Sheeds’ mere presence generated quite a buzz around Fortress Gipps, with a large crowd gathering to listen to his interview with Club Legend and Under 18’s coach Tony Cocks.
GWS Giants David Matthews was also present, as was former AFL Umpire, Harry Beitzel (umpired the 1955 Grand Final between Collingwood & Melbourne). Representatives from our Major Sponsors Merrylands RSL Club, Rossfreight Express, HTT Management and The Crown On McCredie Hotel, all enjoyed the afternoon, and along with the large crowd and fine weather, it was a near perfect Saturday!
The Division 1 team had the wonderful honour of a pre-game address from both Tubby and Sheeds, with the players glued to the words of 2 men who have tasted success at the highest level of their respective codes. The words must have struck the right chord with the players, as the boys went on to play one of their best games of the year and record a convincing win over St George. A loud and proud rendition of the team song in front of the many ex players who stuck around completed what was an excellent day for the club.
