What a crazy weekend of footy in Ontario, with some interesting results and some very close calls! The Phantom had a better week on the predictions but still missing the elusive 5 from 5 in Div 1.
Etobicoke Kangaroos 11.7.73 def High Park Demons 9.5.59
The Roos stepped up on Friday night to secure their first win of the season against the High Park Demons who have now lost two consecutive games and are looking average to say the least. Etobicoke came out of the blocks fast, kicking 4 goals to none in the first quarter and the Demons never quite recovered.
The Demons did fight out to the end, outscoring the Roos but the slow start definitely cost them the game. The Roos led by the three H's - Harris, Hogan and Haesler came away with the win and Etobicoke finally sang their club song.
Phantom is zero from one on Friday night football.
Toronto Eagles 25.10.160 def Hamilton Wildcats 3.10.28
In what can be seen as nothing short of a demolition, the Eagles went to Guelph to take on the Wildcats and made light work of it. The Cats were short with only 15 players and the Eagles matched them which meant plenty of space on the small field at Guelph.
After Willsy kicked 7 goals last week and Runnalls kicked an unbelievable 19 goals on the weekend (I guess he never learnt the art of 'Handballing'), the Cats might want to consider playing some defence!
The Eagles with a massive win, remain undefeated and move to the top of the Division 1 table. Though in my opinion they haven't really been tested in 3 out of the 4 games they've played.
And poor old Phantom is 1 from 2!
Guelph Gargoyles 10.10.70 def Central Blues 6.9.45
Bolstered by the return of Dean, Logel and Robbo to their line up, Guelph locked in their first win of the season with a 4 goal victory over Central Blues at home. The Blues were missing Willsy and while the game wasn't a great spectacle at all, it certainly was a battle.
Kerm Matthews playing in defence leaves huge question marks on Guelph's confidence in this Phantom's mind. It could be said that Guelph were lucky to have Dean in the side who kicked
5 and judged best on ground. Still they are in the winners circle and have the same number of wins after 3 rounds as Central Blues.
Phantom 2 from 3 with my predictions
Broadview Hawks 10.9.69 def Toronto Rebels 6.6.42
It looks like another team came out of the blocks slowly this week with the Rebels being outscored 5 goals to one against the Hawks on Saturday. Nathan Cragg kicked 5 goals in a best on ground performance as the Hawks delivered the Rebels their first loss of the season.
While the Rebels seemingly fought thru to the end, their effort in the first from my viewpoint was pretty ordinary. The Hawks showed their class and why they are a Top 2 contender in 2013 and the Rebels showed that maybe their not. Dullard was in the best again and the Shuttleworth brothers were both playing well and gaining confidence.
Phantom 3 from 4 for Division 1 predictions
Toronto Dingos 10.8.68 def Ottawa Swans 8.6.54
The grape vine has been ripe with talk of the Swans being ripped off on the weekend. While this talk has not come from the Swans camp directly, it is interesting to hear as the Dingos seemingly have been given a get out of jail free card in Round 4.
Coming off a victory against the Demons in Toronto, the Swans were looking to make it two in a row. The Dingos travelled up the 401 without their key forward Wade Edwards in the side but the old dog Veteran Dingo, Craig Stewart stepped up to the plate with 6 goals and a best on ground performance.
Phantom 4 from 5 to end Division 1
WOMENS
High Park Demons 13.16.94 def Etobicoke Kangaroos 2.2.14
This game certainly blew out a lot more than expected and the Roos seemingly did not have the answers to challenge the Demons. The Demons had seven multiple goal kickers with Sue Czyzo leading the way kicking 3 goals.
The Etobicoke girls were on the back foot from start to finish and were never really in with a chance against the Dees, who continue their win streak.
Phantom moves none from one in Women's Division
Hamilton Wildcats 12.9.81 def Ottawa Swans 2.2.14
The ladies from Ottawa made a solo trip down the 401 past Toronto to Guelph to take on the Hamilton Wildcats in Round 4 action. No doubt a long and tough road trip for the Swanettes, they put up a fight but were no match for the Hamilton Wildcats.
This game was said to be more entertaining than the Guelph v Centrals Division 1 game with a lot of up and back action. Unfortunately the Swans could not capitalize while the Cats had a number of multiple goal kickers with Kendra Heil, Candace Kwan and Sam Pepper all kicking 3 goals.
Phantom 1 from 2 in the Women's Division for Round 4
And there you have it, another round of entertaining footy with a few surprises and a little bit of controversy. We can only hope that next week will provided as much excitiement before we head into the Canada Day long weekend.
