Charlie Rose Cup returned on Monday night as the best 22 male student players from the regions Private schools clashed with 22 of the best male student’s players from the regions Secondary State High Schools at Rockville Oval on a crisp afternoon at Rockville Oval.
Erratic kicking cost State High the victory, as both sides finished with the same scoring shots and it was Independent Schools who took out the Charlie Rose Cup 8.5 (53) to 3.10 (28), their first victory since 2005.
It was State High who started the better of the two teams dominating possession in the opening stanza, as Independent were only able to kick 1 goal out of their 4 scoring shots. State High squandered plenty of inside 50 opportunities but was able to make it 100% with their scoring shots booting two goals in the opening quarter.
State High held a narrow lead at quarter time, up by 3 points 2.0 (12) to 1.3 (9).
Fortunes turned in the second quarter as State High could only convert behinds, as the students from the public sector could only manage 5 behinds. Independent did make the most of their scoring opportunities booting 1 goal from their 2 shots as State High again dominated the second quarter.
Independent were able to cut back the lead at the main break but State High was still hanging on 2.5 (17) to 2.4 (16).
In a massive swing in momentum it was Independent who did all the attacking in the third quarter, dominating possession and swinging the scoreboard in their favour. The Private school boys were able to slot home 4 unanswered goals as the State High boys had the goal kicking yips. Only two behinds were recorded by the State High team.
Going into the final quarter Independent were looking goods in a dominated third term, leading 6.4 (40) to 2.7 (19).
Up by 21points with a quarter to play the Independent side slotted home two goals in quick succession to have the State High boys looking for answers. This wasn’t the end as the State High side quickly replied with a major of their own but unfortunately again missing some very “gettable” goals.
Independent ran out 8.5 (53) to 3.10 (28) victors in the 10th Charlie Rose Cup, evening the ledger at 5 Cup wins a-piece. Charlie Rose Cup by Winners by Year
