HINES STRIKES GOLD IN NATIONAL JUNIOR BASKETBALL CLASSIC

Mount Gambier’s outstanding junior basketballer, Rachael Hines, was a member of the Eastern Mavericks Under 16 team which won the gold medal game at the McDonalds National Junior Basketball classic in Melbourne last weekend.

Reports from the weekend indicate that Hines played very well and was a key player in the final in which Eastern Mavericks defeated Eltham, 57-47.

Talented sports woman Lauren Ross played with Eastern Mavericks Under 14 team in the Classic. The team finished fourth in the ranking game going down to Knox 22-61.

Georgia Green played with Under 18 SA State Champion Eastern Mavericks in the Classic. The team’s chances took a dive some weeks ago when SA Country State Captain Sam Lubcke suffered a season ending knee injury. Eastern Mavericks finished 13th. This ranking does not truly reflect the overall performance of the team, which was competitive against class opposition. Green’s consistent standout performances were pivotal to her team being competitive.

Kane deWit travelled to Melbourne to compete in the Classic as a member of the Forestville Under 18 team. Forestville defeated Hawthorn, 59-55, to finish 11th.  DeWit was the leading player for his side, heading the scoring in several games as well as distributing the ball most effectively in the all-important point guard role. Former Boomer and Adelaide 36er, Daryl Pearce, was impressed with deWit’s performance at this elite level.

Mount Gambier Junior Development Officer, Trevor Semmens was very pleased with the achievements of these Junior Lakers in this premier national junior basketball event.
