TRENT SLATTER | THE CHRONICLE | 17 JUNE 2013
THE AFL Darling Downs top five is beginning to take shape after reigning premiers Toowoomba Tigers defeated Goondiwindi 13.7 (85) to 3.12 (30) on Saturday.
The Hawks' wayward kicking in front of goal proved their downfall in a scrappy encounter at Rockville Park.
Goondiwindi dominated possession in the opening term but still went into the first break trailing by two points.
The Tigers then roared to life in the second quarter with seven goals while the Hawks managed just the one behind.
Neither side was able to break away in the second half and the Tigers held their big lead to move into third place on the ladder.
Meanwhile, the league's two newest teams Chinchilla and South Burnett fought out a thriller as the Saints stormed home 12.20 (92) to 14.7 (91).
South Burnett came out firing, kicking 4.7 to Chinchilla's 2.1 in the opening term.
But the Suns rose to the occasion in the second quarter with 6.1 to 1.4 to lead by nine points at the long break.
Both teams kicked three majors in the third term but the Saints had almost double the shots on goal and it was clear the match would go down to the wire.
The two sides traded blows in the final term but it was the Saints who nudged ahead for a memorable victory.
In the weekend's other matches, Dalby kept its season alive with a come-from-behind 12.10 (82) to 7.8 (50) victory over South Toowoomba.
The Swans kicked 5.4 to the Bombers' 0.3 in the third quarter to overcome a 16-point halftime deficit and record their third win of the season.
And University kept the pressure on competition leaders Coolaroo with an 18.12 (120) to 7.3 (45) win over Highfields.
Joel Yosh kicked six goals for the Cougars as they recorded their six straight win.
Uni is now in outright second place with the unbeaten Roos just four points ahead.
Coolaroo took the points from Lockyer Valley at the weekend via forfeit.
