It was an afternoon of a number of tight results, with the eventual winners being Collingwood, Williamstown, North Ballarat and Box Hill Hawks.
The days results pushed Box Hill to top spot, and leaves just one game separating first to sixth spot on the Bailey Ladders VFL ladder.
BOX HILL HAWKS d SANDRINGHAM: Box Hill Hawks have jumped to top spot on the Peter Jackson VFL ladder after holding on against a fast finishing Sandringham. The victory also helped the Hawks claim the inaugural Blue Ribbon Cup between the two sides. Box Hill held a 17 point lead at half time, but Sandringham took control of the game with a six goal to three third term to take a one point lead into the final quarter. Despite the visitors racing out to a 26 point lead with the first four goals of the final term, the Zebras were not finished with. When Terry Milera kicked his fifth to get his side within seven points late in the final term, they were within striking distance, but they could only get within six points as Box Hill won their sixth game in a row. The Hawks continue to share the goals around with their leading goal kicker for the season Liam Tobin kicking two, along with three to Matt Northe and two to Sam Grimley. Matt Spangher, Mitch Hallahan, Xavier Ellis and Kyle Cheney were named among the best for the Hawks, with Brodie Murdoch, Adam Cockie, Peter Shakallis and Myke Cook named the best for Sandringham. Milera kicked five for the Zebras, with Murdoch their only other multiple goal kicker with three.
NORTH BALLARAT d PORT MELBOURNE: The near three year home ground winning streak of Port Melbourne came to an end today as North Ballarat kept their finals hopes alive with a 10-point win. The Roosters kicked the last eight goals of the game, with Taylor Garner’s final two goals of the match providing Gerard FitzGerald and his chargers a much needed victory. Cam Richardson and Taylor Garner kicked three each for the Roosters, with two each to Liam Anthony and Matt Austin. Anthony was named best for the visitors with 34 disposals, while Clifton (25), Oliver Tate (19) and Luke Kiel were among the best performers. Dean Galea kicked four goals for Port, with Shane Valenti and Adrian Bonaddio kicking two each. Toby Pinwill, Galea, Mitch Wooffindin and Chris Cain were named the best for the Borough.
COLLINGWOOD d COBURG: Collingwood overcame a persistent Coburg to win by 28 points. While the win kept Collingwood in sixth spot, Coburg dropped to 12th, and they find themselves two games and 50 % outside of the top eight. The Magpies welcomed the return of Andrew Krakouer who was in great form in the middle with 29 disposals and was his teams’ best. The Magpies were short on rotations in the second half with Callopy and Moloney sidelined, but the likes of Jordan Russell (21), Caolon Mooney, Peter Yagmoor shared the load, along with Marty Clarke (18) and the returning Clinton Young (18). Tim Allan kicked five for the home side; Mooney kicked three, with Nick Gray kicking two. Coburg struggled to gain moment throughout the game, with Luke McGuane (3), Robin Nahas (2) and Brett O’Hanlon (2) their only multiple goal kickers. Sam Lonegan was Coburg’s best, along with Nahas, Matt Arnot and Ben Helbig.
WILLIAMSTOWN d ESSENDON: Williamstown returned to the winners list with a convincing 55-point win over Essendon. After a close first half, with the Seagulls grabbing a five point lead on the half time siren, the home side ran away with the game in the second half as they kicked eight unanswered goals to open a 45-point lead. The nine goal to one second half was in stark contrast to the even first half, with Williamstown proving to have more options to goal with Lachie Hunter (3 goals), Dylan Conway (2), Willie Wheeler (2) and Jarrad Grant (2) the four multiple goal kickers from their 10 individual goal kickers on the day. David Hille was the only multiple goal kickers for the Bombers with two, with Nick O’Brien, David Fahey, Matt Firman and Ben Duscher named their best.
