The Toowoomba Tigers host the Goondiwindi Hawks in this weeks Allied Pickford’s game of the round at Rockville Park.
As we near the half way mark of the season this game looms as a vital win for both clubs who are currently vying for the last remaining finals spot on the ladder. The Tigers currently hold down that 5th position and are 1 game clear of the Hawks who have been the big movers this year with 4 wins through their opening 7 games played.
The Hawks certainly weren’t disgraced by competition leaders Coolaroo last week and actually outscored the Roos in the final term after eventually going down by 52 points. Michael Lynn and Dave O’Toole were the standouts in this game and have been very consistent for the Hawks so far this season. The combination of some new recruits to the club (Troy Millard & Brenton Jardine) and the form of emerging youngers Alex McNaughton & Stuart Lowe mixed with perennial talents of Jeremy Leahy & Stephen Collett have seen the Hawks jump off the bottom of the ladder and in the hunt for a finals berth.
The Tigers on the other hand have had an up and down season and only just managed to snag the 4 points against a dogged south Burnett 2 weeks ago. But as we have come to learn about the reigning champions, premierships aren’t won in June and come September I have no doubt that the Tigers will once again be a force and challenge for their fourth consecutive premiership victory.
In all a must win for both clubs who will look to start their push towards finals very soon.
In other games the 2 expansion clubs meet each other for the first time this season with both clubs looking to record their second win for the season when Chinchilla hosts the South Burnett Saints. Dalby are at home against the South Toowoomba Bombers, Highfields take on University at Kratzke oval and Coolaroo will meet Lockyer with the game being played at USQ AFL Oval. Warwick have the bye.
