One of the most improved clubs this year across the board has been Sydney University.
Rewind back a year the club was struggling to gain any momentum from their move to the NEAFL, finishing last in the Premier Division competition and only managing a Division Five premiership.
Club Commercial and Football Operations Manager, Tim Air is happy where the club is at where they are now competing for finals in most if not all grades.
"Overall we are pleased with the direction the season has taken so far," he said.
"Whilst results may have shown our NEAFL side had a slow start to the year, the improvements were there from the first game and that side has now started to hit some form and see some favourable results.
"In turn, the Premier Division side, which we see as a key development path for future NEAFL players, has performed really well, currently sitting just outside the five on percentage only. The Clubs other four open age sides, as well as Under 18’s, sit comfortably within the top five."
A key focus was to improve depth over the pre-season.
"After our first year in the NEAFL we recognised some areas for development, with recruitment being one of them," Air said.
"Whilst the Club was active, there was a large number of players showing interest in joining the Club of their own accord. The Club again focused on attracting quality players who are currently studying through the Elite Athlete Program, with the assistance of Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness."
The club has benefitted from a more focused approach on and off the field.
"On the field, the emphasis over the off season was on fitness and conditioning, something that has shown across all grades from our elite players down to our sixth grade, division five side," he said.
"Off the field we have made some structural changes to give us the opportunity to focus additional time on the strategic direction of the Club off the field, as well as our goals on the field."
The strong start to the year has the club optimistic about their chances going forward.
"Our results to date certainly indicate an improvement on last year, which was certainly a key focus prior to the season commencing," Air said.
"That said, the Club has focused first on standards, and then on success, with the same expectation across every competition grade. The goal is always to win a premiership, ours is no different. That said, we are realistic, and want to ensure any improvement and growth is sustainable.
"Our overall goal is to develop our brand and identify meaningful commercial and philanthropic partnerships aimed at developing young people as much as young footballers.
"The Club wants to be successful at NEAFL level and that is the key driver in everything we do. We are in the unique position of being able to offer elite players the opportunity to combine studies and AFL, and will continue to do so.
"Any success we have at the top level, will filter down through the Club and all Sydney AFL grades. It is no secret we want to be the Club of choice for all players, whether it be at the elite level, or participation level."
