Well what an interesting weekend of footy we had in Ontario! This Phantom was looking to pick 5 from 5 in the Division 1 competition but a draw on Friday night spoiled the chances of that very early. Unfortunately this Phantom didn't make it to any footy this weekend, but I have my sources and I received some interesting feedback so here goes with the reports!
Etobicoke Kangaroos 8.7.55 drew Toronto Dingos 8.7.55
This Friday night game looked like it would have been played in some horrible conditions but by all reports, the weather had basically blown over by the time the game started. Phantom predictions were Dingos by 8 goals with Wade kicking 5 goals from Full Forward. The result was clearly way off and the mark here, did I over estimate the Dingos or did they underestimate the Roos? The Roos clearly are a proud club who aren't going to go down without a fight and showed just that on Friday night.
Chippa Harris showed that despite carrying a bit, he is someone to watch kicking 5 goals of the Roos 8, with 3 coming in the first quarter. Emile Studham also popped up with two, causing plenty of trouble for the Dingos defence. Big Wade Edwards kicked a couple early on to give the Dingos an early lead, but failed to kick a goal in the final seconds to give the Dingos a win. A drawn game cut short due to lack of light, both teams lucky in a way to get 2 points rather than zero.
Central Blues 4.2.26 def by Toronto Rebels 8.9.57
Reports out of this game is that there was a lot of back and forth but the Rebels defence was resilient all day. Then again, I did say that the Blues lacked scoring options up forward and to see a game with 17 scoring shots to 6 it seems a little one sided. More accurate kicking from the Rebels and this may have been more of a blowout.
Willsy can't set up the play and kick all the goals, especially considering he can only kick 25 meters on a good day, he would have to be pretty close to the line. Armstrong was said to have been giving plenty of run and the Doc was all over the ground.
Daimin Bodnar kicked 3 for the Rebels and Peter Bormann added another 2 to his tally, both were major scorers for the Rebels. All reports from the field is that the Rebels half back line was said to have been their best performers.
A couple of new players with names currently unknown holding the fort down with Michael Fabbri directing things.
Phantom goes to 1 for 2 but a bit more of a blowout than expected.
High Park Demons 9.14.68 def Hamilton Wildcats 4.7.31
In a windy encounter at Mohawk Park, the Wildcats came out of the blocks early and showed they should not be written off any time soon, as they went into the quarter time break with 1 goal lead. Brendan Major and Michael Visser were solid contributors for the Wildcats, with Andy Leon, Danny Di Danto and Dennis Choi all playing well.
But after half time it was all Demons with Neil Casey doing well in the ruck and Christian Doggett sneaking goals. Ash Martin was finding the ball easily across half back, which for a guy who's number one sport is playing defence in field hockey, isn't all that surprising.
Demons with a solid win away move to 2-0 for the season and the Phantom moves to 2 from 3 for the round.
Toronto Eagles 10.6.66 def Guelph Gargoyles 8.9.57
This looks to have been the match of the ground at Humber South on Saturday afternoon in pretty warm conditions. The Eagles with a bit of a surprise upset, Guelph led the game at all changes except the most important one, but the Eagles were always in it. After leading by 19 points at the final change, the Gargoyles reportedly collapsed in the final 10 minutes with Aaron "Hamburgler" Falcioni kicking 4 goals. Runnalls and Koens were once again big contributors for the Eagles.
Guelph were a bit short on numbers for this game missing Robbo, Logel and Millsy and only fielding 19, ran out of legs in the last quarter.
Phantom now 2 from 4 for the round
Broadview Hawks 15.7.97 def Ottawa Swans 3.5.23
It appears it was windy all across the province this round with reports of humid weather, strong winds and long grass coming out of Ottawa on the weekend. The Swans worked hard and Brendan Woods managed to kick 2 goals.
But the Swans were clearly missing Shaughnessy, Kozlowski and Roffey despite fielding good numbers on the day.
In the end it was all Broadview with the Shuttleworth brothers kicking 9 between them and Dullard adding another 2 goals to kick more than half the Hawks score. Must be something special in those mix tapes. Good win for the Hawks who sit 2-0 in the season.
Phantom moves to 3 from 5 to end to Division 1 round.
WOMENS
Etobicoke Roos 5.6.36 def Central Blues 1.1.7
Both sides had great numbers for this game with 16 players each but it was all Etobicoke on the scoreboard. The Lady Blues did manage to get some scores on the board this weekend and will get better as the year goes on.
Renee Tong, Rochelle Allen and Vera Santillana strong for the Blues with Billing, Nicholls and Voth all also working hard.
For the Etobicoke women’s team the Darwin Dynamo Sharna Edwards was strong kicking 2 goals for her side with Madison Amaral, Abby Lalonde and Sylvie De Brabandere also adding majors. Laura Betancourt and Selina Amaral once again in the best for the Roos who look strong in 2013.
Phantom sitting pretty at 1 from 1 in the Women's Division.
High Park Demons 3.8.26 def Hamilton Wildcats 3.5.23
The Phantom picked this one to be a cracking game in the 2012 Grand Final rematch aka Grudge Match. There doesn't seem to be any love lost between these two sides in a game hard hitting game that went right down to the wire.
The Wildcat girls were out to avenge the Grand Final defeat and played hard from the get go. Sam Pepper kicked two and Kendra Heil kicked one, while running herself into the ground. The Demons were lead by Erin Loughnane again kicking 2 goals but Victoria Valaitis was awarded best on for the Demons with a stellar performance.
Phantom prediction was Demons by 5 points and it was even closer than that.
Phantom moves to 2 from 2 in the Women's Division.
And there you go, another exciting round. If the first weeks are anything to go by this should be an interesting season of footy!
