The first three games of Round 8 have been completed with the winners Collingwood, Geelong and Casey Scorpions. We look at the Saturday results and how the matches were won.
COLLINGWOOD d NORTHERN BLUES: Jarrod Witts sealed victory for Collingwood in the final minute of the game, giving Collingwood their third win in a row with a three point win over the Northern Blues. In a game that never saw the margin over 20 points for the entire game, Collingwood hit the lead for the first time in the third term – a quarter which saw six lead changes. Despite the Magpies kicking the opening two goals of the final term to take a 20-point lead, the Northern Blues proceeded to kick five of the next six goals to hit the front at the 24 minute mark of the final term with a Myles Dorman soccer goal (his third). But Collingwood’s big men stood tall in the final six minutes of the game, with Ben Hudson effective around the ground and Witts providing the sealer to give the Magpies a memorable win. Peter Yagmoor’s move onto Jeremy Laidler – who kicked three first half goals – proved telling, with Yagmoor keeping Laidler goalless in the second half whilst finishing the game with 22 disposals. Ben Hudson was named best with 12 disposal and 24 hitouts, along with Witts (19 d, 12 hitouts), Tim Allan (two goals), Tim Broomhead (22 d) and Chris Mangoni . For the Northern Blues Kane Lambert continued his good form in the midfield with 36 disposals plus nine tackles, and was named best along with Tim Lincoln (25), Marcus Davies (19) and Tom Wilson (two goals).
GEELONG d ESSENDON: Geelong has held off a third quarter fight back by Essendon to stop a two game losing streak, victorious by 38 points. After the Cats lead by as much as six goals in the third term, the Bombers kicked four unanswered goals to end the third term to trail by 18 points at three quarter time, and created a contest going into the final term. But Geelong steadied with a seven goal to four final term to claim the win. Mark Corrigan was named best, along with Dawson Simpson, Billy Smedt is his return game from injury and Jaxson Barham who was his sides leading goal kicker with three, along with Josh Walker. For Essendon Cory Dell’Olio was his sides leading scorer with four majors, while Travis Colyer, Matthew Bate and Joe Daniher all kicked two. Ben Duscher, Tatye Pears and Zak O’Brien were among the best for the Bombers.
CASEY SCORPIONS d SANDRINGHAM: Casey Scorpions moved to top spot on the VFL ladder, securing a top four spot at the end of the round, with a 65-point win over Sandringham. After a close first half – where just three goals separated the two sides at half time – Casey kept the home side goalless till the 15 minute mark of the final term as they piled on the goals to set up their win. Rory Taggert and Max Gawn led the goal kicking for the Scorpions with four goals each, with Dan Nicholls (3) and Sam Blease (2) their multiple goal kickers. Nicholls (23 disposals) was among the best for Casey, along with Blease (19), James Sellar (17), Tom Couch (34) and Gawn (39 hitouts). For Sandringham, Trent Dennis Lane had a promising first half with four goals, but ended up on that total as his sides leading goal kicker ahead of Tom Lee with two and only another two single goal scorers. Peter Shakalis was named the Zebras best, along with Dennis-Lane (13 disposals), Adam Cockie (20) and Josh Saunders.
