Clubs across the Darling Downs joined in the AFL’s celebration of Indigenous Round last weekend.
Indigenous players from 11 junior and senior clubs were given the opportunity to lead their teams onto the ground and act as captains for the day.
An Acknowledgement to Country was performed before each of the A Grade matches, including a special performance by Indigenous elder Uncle Darby McCarthy at the Coolaroo v Highfields match at Gold Park.
The game proved to be a special one for Coolaroo’s Indigenous midfielder Phil Dreise, who kicked 10 goals in their 20 goal victory over the Lions.
“The round allowed AFL Darling Downs to showcase our sport, while recognising the significant contribution Indigenous people have made to our game” said AFLQ Regional Manager, Keith Webb.
During the week lead-in AFL Queensland staff also held coaching clinics at Rockville State School and St Joseph’s Murgon Primary School, both of which have a high proportion of students with Indigenous heritage.
A specially themed souvenir edition of the AFL Darling Downs GameDay magazine was also produced which can be viewed here.
This weekend, AFL Darling Downs turns its attention to Thanks Ump Round where we recognise the fantastic work of the boys, girls, men & women in orange.
