Warwick wins third straight game to start season

The Subway Warwick Wildcats remain one of only two teams to still be undefeated after the third round of the Southern Basketball League. The Wildcats were able to overpower the Noosa Cyclones at Noosa on Saturday night, coming away from the Sunshine Coast as convincing winners 95-72. The only other team to have lost no matches yet this season is the Brisbane Capitals. The Wildcats moving into sixth place on the points table out of 16 teams.

The game was an arm-wrestle in the first half as expected, with the Wildcats leading by only one point at half-time, with the lead changing regularly throughout. Even though the scores were close, the Wildcats were well placed strategically with the top three Noosa players on three fouls each (out of the allowable 5 fouls each), and getting tired from relentless defence.

The hard work paid off, with more hard defence from the Wildcats, Noosa’s top player was fouled out in the third quarter, which restricted the Noosa offence from that time on. The Wildcats opened up a 20 point lead in the third quarter. Then, Noosa’s second best player was fouled out in the last quarter, and the Wildcats tightened the pressure to continue their momentum, eventually running away by 23 points at full time. Noosa were favourites to win the contest, but the Wildcats proved that they are going to be hard to beat this season.

Declan Starasts showed great leadership, playing for the first time as Captain, top scoring with 27 points in a great all-round game. Once again Paul Aleer played well, scoring 26 points and two huge slam dunks over the defence. Other scorers were Snowy Quinn 22 points, DJ Cremasco 7, Max Quinlan-Ward 11 and Peter Acuil 2

Coach Jeff Clark was happy with the win, with the whole team starting to play their team roles well. The win was even better, when you consider that the team was still missing big players Josh Cremasco with work commitments, and Cameron Scutts to return in two weeks time. The other good sign is that they have now beaten three good quality teams, whereas many other teams wins have come against weaker teams.

The Subway Warwick Wildcats return home again this Saturday night to take on 15th placed team, the Maroochydore Clippers, who are yet to record a win this season. They play in Warwick at WIRAC, this Saturday night at 5pm.
