A stunning result at the home of women’s footy, Coburg City Oval, began the round on Saturday and ended with an emphatic win by the Eastern Devils over the Spurs on Sunday. Let not your heart be troubled, here is what happened and why it happened.
It is beginning to become clear that no team can deter Darebin from their path to a premiership this season, as they demolished second-placed Diamond Creek to the tune of 144 points. Not many would have predicted this result, but it was clear early that the Falcons meant business as they skipped out to a 38-point lead by quarter-time. That would blow out to double at half-time and the Falcons would add nine goals in the second half. Daisy Pearce, Karen Paxman, Elise O’Dea (4) and Jane Lange (3) led the rout, while Dianna Haines, Lauren Brazzale and Amelia Barden tried for the stunned Creekers.
A determined Berwick ran out of steam against a third-place Melbourne Uni at Edwin Flack Reserve on Sunday, losing 6.12 (48) to 9.10 (64). Despite being down to one on the bench, the Wickers were within three points of the Mugars at the final break. Two goals from the visitors in the final term was enough to snuff out the challenge from the hosts. The 18-point lead at half-time was brought back to 3-points by Berwick. Four goals from the Mugars’ Lauren Byrnes, as well as top games from Emma Phillips and Nicola Stevens guided their team to a hard-fought win.
Eastern Devils blew the St Albans Spurs away in the final term to run away 16.17 (113) to 1.2 (8) winners at Mulgrave Reserve on Sunday. An undermanned and eventually outdone St Albans unit battled away but didn’t have enough to build a challenge to the finals contenders in the Devils. The Devils used their run and carry to devastating effect to finish 105-point winners, as the Spurs had them covered at ground level. Well lead by ruck Meg Hutchins and Jess Trend all day, the hosts provided great service to forwards Sarah D’Arcy (four goals) and Shelley Beggs (three goals). Bree White, Ashleigh Guest and Danni Teasdale were the standouts for the Spurs.
