There is a renewed energy at Picken Oval with the Western Suburbs Magpies well in the race for finals in all grades.
New club president, Nick Miller credits the attitude for the resurgence of the club especially in Premier Division, where the club has almost won more games than in the whole of 2012.
"Both on and off the field there has been a very positive attitude to all Western Suburbs has done," he said.
"Off the field we have an enthusiastic and skilled committee, Picken Oval is in the best shape for many years and we have strong sponsorship support."
Miller was full of praise for returning Senior coach, Kevin Eynaud.
"Kevin’s return to the Magpies has brought us great coaching experience in AFL Sydney with a strong guidance for a very young side," he said.
"Kevin has never-ending energy and commitment to the whole club as demonstrated by his active involvement with both Western Suburbs juniors and other pathway clubs."
According to Miller, the coach and committee are building on the hard work of the recent past at the club, as well as setting a platform for future success.
"The club has great numbers across all teams and the new link with Canterbury Hurlstone-Park RSL has already shown great benefit – notably at the recent fantastic ANZAC Day ceremony at Picken Oval," Miller enthused.
"Many things also stay the same at Wests, such as club stalwart Barbara Dickin continuing her great timekeeping work both at home and away, and for representative games."
The club is excited about their Super Saturday at Henson Park today as Miller explains.
"Super Saturday at Henson Park is a Western Suburbs initiative dating back to 2005 where seniors and juniors teams from the club play on the same day," he said.
"This year is further enhanced with the women’s team the Wolves playing at 2.10pm. γThe day showcases all aspects of Sydney football – men, women and juniors – with Auskick from 8.30 am to Premier Division starting at 6.30 pm.
"Super Saturday is a good example of how well the senior and junior teams work together with one highlight of Super Saturday 2012 being the guard of honour that our senior men provided to the Wests Juniors U10s when they ran onto the field.γ The looks on the faces of the boys when they were clapped onto the field by our senior players was priceless."
Miller has a full club focus when asked about the aims for the remainder of 2013.
"Western Suburbs Magpies aims to continually improve both on and off the field, to ensure it remains a vital force in Sydney football, and integral part of the Inner-West community," he said.
"Our main aims for the season include improving our player strength at all levels, selecting the best coaching and support staff and providing our players with the best opportunities to play their best footy. γγ
"While we have realistic expectations in what is really a rebuilding year, we have a very strong desire to improve on our results from last year."
