Collingwood have halted Geelong’s unbeaten start to the 2013 Peter Jackson VFL season with a 13 point win on Saturday at Victoria Park as Jarrad Conron reports.
Jackson Paine starred up forward for Collingwood kicking five goals, with Tim Allan and Alan Didak both slotting three apiece.
Down the other end, Mitch Brown kicked four goals and had help from Shane Kersten and Jordan Murdoch who kicked three and two goals respectively for the match.
Both sides put on a heap of pressure early in the match, causing mistakes all over the ground.
Collingwood weren’t able to hit their targets and Geelong were able to take advantage, going into the first break with a six point lead.
The Cats lengthened their lead in the second term booting five goal to three up until the 20 minute mark of the quarter.
Jackson Paine then took a hold of the game marking everything that came his way and kicking two of Collingwood’s last three goals for the quarter.
Another goal courtesy of Tim Allan put the pies up by two points heading into the main break.
“There were times in this game where it could’ve gotten away from us, we were 17 points down at the 20 minute mark of the second quarter and we’ve come back at half time,” Tapping said after the match.
Collingwood kept piling on the goals, stretching the lead out to 15 points early in the third term but the attitude of this Geelong side meant they weren’t going to go down without a fight.
Mitch Brown kicked three of his four majors in the third term as the Cats pegged back Collingwood’s lead to one point at three quarter time.
When asked if last rounds loss to Williamstown was brought up in conversation at three quarter time with the Pies in a similar position as they were against the Seagulls, Tapping was confident his side didn’t need that motivation.
“It wasn’t mentioned, we covered it during the week and said it if happened again we would confront it and deal with it,” Tapping said.
An intense final quarter saw bodies over the ball at every contest with Collingwood able to get it forward and convert the opportunities.
Goals to Didak, Ben Richmond, first gamer Tim Broomhead and Ben Moloney sealed the game for the Pies.
Moloney was named best afield accumulating 32 possessions throughout the match. Jackson Heagney-Steart was also among the best playing a fantastic game across half back.
Captain Jack Hellier also had an outstanding game amassing a heap of the ball and kicking a goal.
Next week, Collingwood will look to cement their spot inside the top eight against Essendon. Geelong will look to retain top spot on the ladder going up against the Casey Scorpions.
