Crows make it two on the trot
The Under 14 Darling Downs Crows have moved inside the Top 5 after a convincing 38-point victory over Coorparoo on a windy afternoon at Rockville Oval.
Tom Matthews and Brendan Shelton were prolific up forward booting 10 of the Crows 11 goals between them. Darling Downs ran out 11.6 (72) to 5.4 (34) victors in front of a strong home crowd.
Darling Downs booted the first 3 goals of the game before Coorparoo could register an inside 50 stat but when the Premiers went inside 50 they converted. Matthews kicked an impressive running goal in the opening minutes after missing last week’s clash with Caboolture. Shelton picked up from where he finished last week as he put through the next 2 majors in quick succession.
Coorparoo caught the Crows ‘snoozing’ and got back into the game late in the first term with 3 quick goals, as scores were levelled at the first break 3 straight-a-piece.
The second quarter was a tight tussle early on as Brock Aston and Kale Ross got busy around the stoppages. It wasn't until the 6th minute mark of the second term when the Crows broke the shackles and were able to register the first major of the second quarter, as Shelton kicked his 3rd. Livewire forward Tom Matthews slotted his 2nd from 30metre out on a slight angle and Darling Downs started to gain control of the game.
It wasn't long until the Crows were putting another on the board as Matthews showed his quick feet to side step and drill a pin point pass to Shelton, who strolled in and kicked his 4th. Darling Downs were able to keep Coorparoo to just the 1 behind as the Crows stretched the lead to 19points at the long break.
DD lead 6.2 (38) to 3.1 (19) as Coach Charlie Aston praised the Crows on doing the little things right during the break. He also urged his troops to respect the reigning premiers and keep working as a unit.
Matthews continued his dominance up forward kicking his 3rd in the opening seconds, after midfielder Kale Ross kicked the footy to Matthew’s advantage. It wasn't long until Matthews was on the end of some more midfield brilliance and was able to drill through his 4th for the afternoon.
Coorparoo were able to sneak home a goal of their own against the flow as they decreased the margin to 25-points.
But it wasn't long as the Crows went coast to coast with an impressive team goal that saw Sam Tasker finish off and celebrate as the Crows united. It wasn't long again until Tom Matthews continued his superb afternoon booting his 5th on the siren to extend the Crows half-time lead of 19 out to 39-points.
It was a fairly even final term as both sides could only record 1 goal apiece. Shelton continued his dominance and kicked his 5th that included a joyous celebration. The Roos were able kick the final goal of the game just before the final siren and bring the final margin back to 38-points.
Brock Aston, Kale Ross, Ryan Neumann all stood tall for the Crows in the big win over the reigning Premiers but it was the Matthews and Shelton show, both finished with 5 goals apiece.
Coach Charlie Aston said that his team’s usage and ability to read the footy is what stood out most.
"We seemed to read the footy and the play, better than our opponents today and our usage in these conditions was fantastic, something we have worked hard on," Coach Aston said.
"We have been working on our confidence both on and off the track, today was about our usage, pressuring them and I knew if we could tick those off we would be no worries, “Aston added.
The Crows will not play next weekend due to the Under 15 School Boy State Championships out at Dalby AFC starting this Thursday 23rd May but the Crows will train this week on WEDNESDAY and not Tuesday.
