We recap the Saturday results in the Peter Jackson VFL, with the winners: Collingwood, Port Melbourne, Sandringham, Northern Blues, Werribee Tigers and Box Hill Hawks
COLLINGWOOD d GEELONG: The final undefeated VFL team has fallen with Collingwood defeating Geelong by 13 points. A goal after the siren gave the Magpies the lead at three quarter time, and it was a lead they would retain till the final siren, unlike their previous round encounter versus Williamstown where they were overrun by the Seagulls. Nothing separated the two teams all afternoon, with no more than three goals the biggest lead of the day. Jackson Paine led the way with five goals, three in a six goal second term by the Magpies, and better players were Ben Moloney (32 possessions) Alan Didak (3 goals), Ben Hudson (27 hitouts) and both Jackson Heagney-Steart and Adam Oxley in defence. Kyle Martin (35 possessions) and Ben Johnson (28) were amongst the leading possession getters. For Geelong, Mitch Brown moved forward and kicked four goals, with Shane Kersten kicking three. Matt Sully was the best in defence, along with Mark Corrigan, Brown and Jordan Murdoch.
PORT MELBOURNE d ESSENDON: Port Melbourne moved to second spot on the Peter Jackson VFL ladder with a come from behind win against Essendon. In familiar territory over recent games for the Borough, the visitors completed their third win in a row after trailing at three quarter time in all of those three matches. After Port held the early lead, Essendon hit the front at the 15 minute mark of the second term, and it was a lead they would not relinquish till midway through the final term. The Bombers benefited from the visitors inaccuracy, which produced seven second term behinds. Dean Galea made his return to the Borough forwardline with two first term goals, but more importantly his two final term goals helped regain the lead twice for the Borough and gave them the match. Galea was the leading goal scorer with four majors, and was well supported by Josh Scipione with three and Chris Cain with two. Cain’s two second half goals helped him to being named best for Port Melbourne, along with Wayde Skipper, Sam Pleming and Toby Thoolen. For Essendon Joe Daniher led the goal kickers with four, whilst their best were Leroy Jetta, Courtney Dempsey and Kyle Hardingham.
BOX HILL HAWKS d CASEY SCORPIONS: A nine goal to two second term helped the Box Hill to their third win in a row, defeating Casey Scorpions by 60 points at Casey Fields. After the Scorpions opened the second term with a goal to Best, the visitors kicked eight unanswered goals, featuring two each to Jed Anderson and Sam Grimley. The home side could only get as close as 34 points in the final term, but to the Hawks credit they closed out the game with four unanswered goals to record a percentage boosting win. Xavier Murphy was the best for Box Hill with 29 disposals, and was joined in the best by Marc Lock (24), Mitch Hallahan (27) and Anderson (3 goals & 17d). Tom Gordon, Daniel Pratt and David Mirra were strong in defence for the Hawks. For Casey, Jake Best was their only multiple goal kicker with two, whilst Cam Pedersen (27 disposals, 11 marks), Tom Couch (29), Best (16) and Daniel Nicholls (19) amongst their best.
SANDRINGHAM d BENDIGO: Sandringham overcame a determined Bendigo outfit to the tune of 76 points at Queen Elizabeth Oval today. After kicking three goals in the first four minutes of the match, a dull day looked forecast for the Gold, but despite some great runs by the visitors, the Gold continued to add to the scoreboard all afternoon with Alex Pollock kicking four goals, and Alik Magin with two goals amongst their best. Sandringham however dominated in the middle, and the likes of Brodie Murdoch, Tom Curren (31 disposals, 9 marks), Chris Michaliades (21) and Trent Dennis Lane (4 goals) were amongst their best. Myke Cook and Clint Jones led the disposals with 35 and 34 respectively.
WERRIBEE TIGERS d COBURG: Werribee has bounced back for their first win since round two, defeating Coburg by 89 points. A nine goal to three first term set up the win, as the home side restricted the visitors to no more than four goals a term. Key forwards Ben Warren and Ben Brown both kicked five each up forward, with the latter bringing down 11 marks. Jarred Moore continued this consistent form with 25 disposals and a best on ground performance, which included seven clearances and eight tackles, with Greenwood, Brown, Kennedy and Gysberts amongst the best. For Coburg, Matt McDonough kicked three, whilst Liam McBean and Ben Clifton both chipped in with two. Clifton, Daniel Venditti and Sam Lonergan were named their best.
NORTHERN BLUES d NORTH BALLARAT: A seven goal to one second term has helped the Northern Blues back to the winners list, recording a 44-point win over North Ballarat. The Blues dominated in the middle, with Shaun Hampson recording over 60 hitouts, feeding the onball brigade, of which Kane Lambert continued on his good state game form with three goals and 32 disposals. Joining Lambert amongst the best were Andrew Collins (27 disposals), Andre Gianfagna, Tim Totevski and Levi Casboult. For the Roosters, James Keeble was their only multiple goal kicker with two, with Michael Searl, Cam Richardson (25 disposals), Keeble and Oliver Tate (22) named as their best.
