Charlton v Boort
Charlton again started the game at a hot pace and had Boort floundering until well into the term. Inaccuracy was letting the home side down as what appeared to be reasonably easy shots at goal could not be converted and by the first break they had scored 3-7 to hold a 12-point lead. Boort were not able to worry the scorers until well into the quarter and had the Navy Blues kicked straight the game could have been out of reach early.
In what was a fierce contest in the second quarter, neither side was able to get on the board, particularly with goals, where only two goals were kicked for the term. Charlton was again off target and added 1-8 to Boort’s 1-4 in what was a very physical contest, where neither side gave an inch as they fought desperately to achieve a better result on the score board, at half time the home side held a 16-point lead, but with nineteen scoring shots to eight they could have been looking at a big score and win but inaccurate kicking had kept the opposition well in the game to this point.
After the main break it was Charlton who settled back into the game quickest and this resulted in Roberts marking and scoring full points, moments later he repeated the dose and the Navy Blues had kicked out to lead by about 30-points. Boort answered with a goal only to see Walklate soccer one off the ground for another major. Just before the three quarter time siren Boort registered their second goal and reduced the margin back to 25-points.
With a few stern words from both camps at the break, Boort were the first to respond from the coaches’ address when Cameron marked and made no mistake. Taylor added another and the Magpies were closing in on the Navy Blues, Finlay snapped a goal to give the home side a bit of breathing space. Cameron who was marking everything up forward again lined up and delivered. With less than two kicks separating the two sides the pace of the game went up another gear and when Cameron kicked his third for the term the Magpie supporters were thinking a repeat of last week was on the cards. Charlton were not going to give this game up without a fight and when Clifford, McKee and Laffin added late goals the Navy Blues were safe, holding onto a 25-point lead at the final bell.

Donald v Wycheproof-Narraport
Donald played host to the Demons and were looking to continue their good form from last week, where they easily accounted for last year’s premiers, Wedderburn. Wycheproof who had lost their past two games were looking to get back on the winners list and they set about it in the right way kicking four first quarter goals and held the Royal Blues to just the one major and took a 17-point lead to the quarter time break.
Donald were better in the second term and had ten scoring shots resulting in 5-5 for the term but Wycheproof-Narraport responded late in the term with late goals and at the main break while their quarter time lead had been reduced they still held sway by 12-points in what was building to be a great second half.
In this third term both sides broke even as the play rebounded between the two half back lines with some good duels going on in the midfield. Adam Baird was very prominent for the Royals and was being well supported by Darcy Harrison and Lucas Anderson, for the Demons Ricky Allan, Matt Dillon and Boe Bish were providing plenty of drive for the visitors. At the final break the Demons led by 13-points, but I guess they were wondering if their lead would be sufficient to hold of the Royals with one term to go.
In what turned out to be a struggle for both sides in the final quarter, neither side could gain the required break on their opposition, where both sides were able to answer the other sides scoring. Donald won the term but the one point extra they kicked than the Demons was not sufficient and the Demons got back onto the winning list with a 12-point win.

St Arnaud v Birchip-Watchem
St Arnaud’s opening term score set up their win over the Bulls at Lord Nelson Park. Kicking 7-6 to the visitors 1-1 had the Saints heading back on track after they suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Boort last week. St Arnaud was strengthened by the return of their Northern Territory players in Munkara, Tungatalum and Pupangamirri with all making solid contributions to the Saints win.
The second quarter was much the same as the first quarter with the home side dominating the play and doing the majority of the scoring. Birchip-Watchem managed to kick a couple of goals in the term but they were no match for the Saints who added another five majors to take a lead of 58 points to the long break.
In the third quarter the Bulls were held goalless while the Saints added another three to extend their lead out to 78 points and squash any chance of the Bulls making up the difference. The home side was dominating all over the ground and this was frustrating to the opposition who were trying their hearts out but could not break through the solid defence of the St Arnaud side.
With nothing to lose the Bulls threw everything at the Saints but it was all to no avail as the home side kept turning back the forward moves of the Bulls, who late in the term were able to convert on a couple of occasions. Grigg at full forward managed to kick two goals for the day but his supply was cut off many times by the well groomed Saints backmen. At the final siren the Saints had clocked up their second win for the year and would see them re-enter the top four in second position. A win of 83 points was a good way to get back into the top four for the Saints while the Bulls remain winless and will be looking for a change in fortunes in the weeks ahead.
Final scores St Arnaud 17-16=118 def Birchip-Watchem 5-5=35
