This week’s Allied Pickfords match of the round see’s the University Eagles face off against the Toowoomba Pinkies in a Round 5 Heritage Clash.
The Tigers v Cougars matchup has shaped up as a tough one for the Cougars in the past, with their last victory coming back in Round 14, 2010. Since then, the Tigers have won 7 straight, including 3 consecutive knockout finals.
The Tigers have played tough, uncompromising football which has often shocked the Cougars who like to run out in the open spaces of Rockville Oval or Baker St. This will once again be the key to the Tigers getting up in the now traditional Heritage Clash.
Matthew Taylor has been in superb form for the Tigers picking up votes in all three of their matches so far, whilst newcomer James Kain & Michael O’Donoghue have been in fine touch up forward with 7 goals apiece. It is the spread of goalkickers which has proven tough for opposition teams to overcome with many smaller players and midfielders registering themselves on the scoreboard.
For the Cougars, they suffered a narrow 6 point loss against competition leaders Coolaroo last week after a dismal first half. The Cougars have welcomed many youngsters into the team to support their strong key position players. Heath Gniel is once again finding the scoreboard with regularity with support from the young midfield brigade of Ash Harley, Luke Brumley & Ryan Hopkins.
The Tigers appear to have started slowly once again in season 2013, however they know better than anyone that premierships aren’t won in May. Still, whichever team drops this game will be staring at an unenviable 2-2 record in a very competitive season of footy.
In the other matches, Coolaroo will have to get over being a couple of players short when they travel to Chinchilla for the first time. The SUNS were a much better side at home, pushing South Toowoomba for 2.5 quarters before running out of legs.
South Burnett will celebrate their marquee round for the season when they raise awareness for Domestic Violence against the South Toowoomba Bombers in Kingaroy in front of MP’s, local business owners and newfound club supporters.
Warwick will look to continue their undefeated start to season 2013 with a big matchup against Lockyer Valley at Roddies Oval. Lockyer Valley will have been fired up for their rematch with Goondiwindi last weekend, only to be overrun in the last quarter.
In the final match, Dalby will travel to Goondiwindi in what promises to be a very interesting matchup. Both sides are well improved from last season and will be looking for a crucial win here to ensure they are seriously considered for the race to the finals.
Highfields have the bye.
